Backfire problem at peak boost
Backfire problem at peak boost
Alright guys,
I have had my 06 EVO RS for over 6 months now. I bought it with 4,000 miles on it from a dealer. The previous owner had done some nice little mods to it. A flash tune with a blitz boost controller, rear strut tower brace, nice pioneer stereo, upgraded front tower brace, and a JDM BOV.
Anyway, About 2,000 miles ago I went on a road trip and about 100 miles in I floored the car in 5th gear and right at peak boost it backfired on me. I than continued on my trip for another 1,000 miles without another one. I didn't go easy on it either. Than right before I got home I shifted down to 4th and floored it and it did it again at peak boost.
It has not done it since but it doesn't like to hold peak boost. The car shakes back and forth a bit. Up until the first backfire it had been running really strong... Super fast and I love it.
I was told by a DSM Mechanic that it sounded like the BOV has leaks. I now have the BOV off the car and the seal is good, is it possible the spring is malfunctioning? Is there anyway to test for that?
Thank you for any input.

what is the boost psi? you could be hitting boost cut, has it gotten colder were you live, the colder air will make the psi rise maybe a couple of pounds, and you'll hit boost cut.
if it was the bov it wouldn't buck, at peak boost the bov would come open and you would here a loud leak of air but not a buck, the stock bov for an IX is good up to 25psi or maybe alittle more.
or it could be the spark plugs, but usually don't need changing into about 60,000 miles depending on driving style.
where is the flash from?
whats the boost set at?
what is the JDM BOV? the factory one?

This is the BOVhttp://www.lancershop.com/customer/p...ctid=191&cat=3
Basically a metal version of the stock one.
I do not know where the flash was from but I did take it to tuning technologies after I got it and they said it was set at 25 psi and it was done right.
When it backfired the boost was at about 23 psi.. I have run 25 around Willow Springs raceway in the summer no problem when I got it.
Yes it has gotten cooler, but I have acounted for that an actually I am only runing at a stock boost about 20.5 peak or so. The car is still fast, I pulled a 06 GTO on the fwy.
It just doesn't feel as smooth anymore and of course a backfire is not good.
Now, I haven't check the actual plugs yet since the miles are still low, but I did check the wires and they are fine... no cuts or anything. I chage the oil every 1500 miles with mobile one and with a K&n Filter. I did replace the air filter before my trip and that very next day it backfired... I don't know if that could have anything to do with it... but just giving info.
Let me know if you need more info.

yeah that BOV is good. and on the IX the metal version came stock, the plastic one's were on the VIII's
i know then when it got colder here i started hitting boost cut at peak torque, so i changed my boost cut in ecuflash to make it higher, and turned the MBC down a click and it's all find now.
is the boost controller electrical or manual?
are all the hoses running from the boost controller good, no cuts or anything?
maybe the spring inside the controller(if manual) is not seated right on the ball.
allowing more boost to run through if not seated right.
maybe the tuner didn't rise the boost cut in ecuflash.
just some more thought's, sounds like maybe the boost controller,
sorry it took me so long to get back to you, good luck

Thanks guys... Socalevo.net posted that I need to check the gaps in my plugs. They didn't think I needed to change them since I have low miles. The boost lines and hoses are perfect. Also, I have an electronic controler. I am going to check the plugs this week and if that doesn't work than I will have the system checked for leaks. Thank you again guys! I'll let ya know what the result is.
