Well, compression was still good, so I have a leakdown tester coming. If it's a bad ring, the compression test would could still just be just fine.

I personally dont like compression tests. Yea the are good for some diagnosis but a leak down test will tell everything and is a better indication of what is wrong with your engine.

How do you easily tell TDC for each cylinder?

Put a screwdriver on top of the piston and rotate the crank. Once you get a feel for it you will know when the screwdriver is at it's highest, hence TDC.
