Fuel pump options

I tried to search but no results. Either I suck at it or there is no info out there.
I am sick of my Walbro pump being so loud and am constantly concerned that it is failing. When the weather is hot and the pump starts whinning a lot, I seem to lose some power/response (may be in my head). Anyway, to make a long story short, are there other brands out there for the EVO?

Sigfrid,

To a certain extent when the weather gets really hot everyone with an internal combustion engine loses a little power (air is less dense), so it might not be in your head, but it may not be the fuel pump either. You might consider going with a stock EVO IX fuel pump. One of our techs says they flow better than the stock VIII pumps and they seem to be pretty quiet. Also just out of curiousity which Walbro pump do you have, the normal or high pressure? and what modifications are you running?

That's why they're called Whinebro's! To be quite honest, my stock fuel pump had a real loud high pitched sound to it, so switching to a walbro gave me a more bearable tone. The only option I know of is a "Denso or Nippon" or something like that. It costs about three times that of a walbro.

Bill, how can we know if we have the HP or normal walbro? I bought mine roughly two years ago.

The normal Walbro is part number GSS317
The high pressure pump in part number GSS342

The numbers are stamped on the side of the pump.

Stock ix is a direct replacement and nice and quiet.. the diff in the viii pump and the ix is that there is no flow cut in the upper end as well as a little more overhead in flow from the start...someone here had posted a flow chart for pumps...I can't attache it but it in here somewhere.

Pumps

Thanks a lot for the feedback.
I've had the pump for 2 years and it never made this much noise. It usually starts after 20 or 30 minutes of driving and you canc hear it change pitch/voltage as you accelerate. Even with the radio on.
I do have some mods, Turbo (evo9 WR), headers, full exhaust with high flow cat, cams, computer + a few minor things.
I think an evo9 pump might be the way to go. Now where can I find one?

All internal tank fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel in the tank. Keep your tank filled up 1/2 or more to keep it submerged is one option.

If you want a high quality high flow pump that fits in the stock fuel housing, there is a Denso OEM pump that flows 245L and costs about $250. Denso quiet and dependable.

For the EVO IX pump you could try and find someone who swapped to a Walbro and grab their stock pump (replace the filter on it) or go to the dealer for a really expensive new unit.

Thanks Bill.

Since I am not in a huge hurry, I will look for a Denso or a IX unit and see what I find.
I appreciate everyone's feedback on this. Later,

Sigfrid

Which one of these pumps is recommended? I was going to get a new pump, but wasn't sure what the real difference would be on my IX. They both flow the same. Is the HP version necessary? Just wondering what most people use.

The standard pump should be good for most applications.
