Exedy twin retainer clip. need advice!

I just got a new to me "used” Exedy twin. It didn't come with the retainer clip thingy for the t/o bearing... My mechanic installed my used (new to me) clutch with a used retainer clip thing that he had lying around the shop. The first time he pressed in the clutch it popped off....
I didn't know this thing even existed until today when he started dropping the tranny again.

So; yes I had him put in a used clutch, but his used part failed!

Whose fault is this??

We haven’t talked price yet, but I think they want me to pay for the re-install.
What should I do?

Thanks

i check them as i put the tranny back into its place befor i tighten the first bolt but i have had the pressure of the slave cylinder pop one or two of them back out. i would call exedy to get a new retainer clip and have him install the new one all over again.

get a new retainer clip, and use 3 to 4 wavy washers, not just the 2 it comes with.

who's fault is it??? well i dunno that i would have used a used spring from an old clutch, but on the same token, how are we sure they didnt screw it up

if the input shaft hits the retainer going in, that will cause it pop out... trust me i've done it.

once the tranny has a few bolts holding it to the block, go a head pop the TOB into the pressure plate BEFORE reassembling everything back one the car..... once again i've done it

i say they eat it, sounds like they have NO idea what the h*ll it is that they are doing.

Given the well documented issues with Exedy retainer clips, installing a used one is just asking for this kind of outcome. If your mechanic was familiar with Exedy clutches, he'd have known that. If you'd done your "search" homework here, you'd have become educated on it yourself. My bet is neither of you knew about the problem. That's an expensive problem when you're not doing your own work. Since he made the choice to use a used clip (without asking you?), I'd suggest he should bear the cost of the time to redo it right.

I agree...

I think they should have to pay for the re-install. If they would have called me, i know i would have said "use a new spring" just for this reason.

this is exactly why I dont install used parts at my shop. They always seen to be 99%, lacking something. Those kind of situations are just asking for this kind of outcome.

You provided an incomplete part, the mechanic was just trying to get your car back to you by using what he had available to him. I dont see why everyones flaming the guy for putting a used retainer clip in the clutch, I mean we are installing a USED twin disk right? If that clutch came to you complete you still would be installing a USED retaining clip.

On the flip side, your mechanic as a business owner IMO needs to constantly be thinking about how to cover his a$$ while taking care of the customer at the same time. He should have thought to himself, wow what if this part that I supply fails then theyre going to want ME to cover this. If I were him I would have called you to see what you wanted to do before I installed the clutch. That way there would be no gray area and everything would be well communicated.

IMO I think you both should split the repair. Good luck getting everything sorted out.

If it was a new in box clutch, with all the parts, and the clip pops off, it's the mechanics fault for sure, and he should eat any extra labor. But since the part was used, and missing the retaining clip, you are also accountable for the extra labor to some degree. He was doing you a favor by trying to make it work with what he had lying around the shop. It didn't work, so he's at fault to some degree also.

Split the extra labor cost.
