another turbo down?

hi guys.

had a track day cut short today. Noticed the boost not being as high as it should but otherwise all was great. Then a little later in the session nothing, nada, ziltch. Zero boost. The gauge runs right up through the vacuum and stops at zero.

But, there is no smoke, the car runs as it should, just can't make positive pressure.
Can't tell if it is spooling as I don't have good ears for that.

I would think if a hose was loose the car would have trouble driving/running at all?
the hoses do look tight.
stock ecu flashed, ebc, water injection.

fittings tight, ebc acts correct, what could it be.

ecuflash says egr problem and baro sensor problem, so that is unrelated.
all electrical plugs seem good, stock intake all buttoned down.

Correct me if im wrong, but if an EGR hose is messed up it could affect your boost. It is a vacuum leak. My car had the EGR hose pop off and it wasnt boosting correctly, but i was getting boost. Check the wastegate as well. I dont know what else it could be though other than a really bad boost leak.

yeah I'll try to locate the egr stuff. but I have a feeling that it is separate issue.

so you are suggesting the wastegate flapper is left open? would that mean the actuator is dislodged, broken or stuck in the open position? I aways hear people talk about 11 lb of psi when the wastegate is no working.
as you can see,I don't know enough to be running a turbo but I love the throttle response.

Do a boost leak test. I honestly cant tell you exactly how the car would act if the wastegate was stuck open/shut. Id imagine in your case the wastegate is open. Do a boost leak test though and, in your case, it should be obvious enough to find it.

As far as the EGR goes. Your EGR valve is up against the firewall and its a PITA to see as your intake mani is covering it up. I just had to feel for it and find the loose hose that way.

removed the heat shields to check the actuator rod.

the rod is very stiff. is this the norm?

the wastegate lever arm is very easy to move, I mean it doesn't feel to be attached to the heavy gate. it has a tinny sound when clanked against the extremes. An old turbo in my garage has some mass when you move the arm, this one doesn't. Is it concievable the gate has dislodged so the turbo isn't spinning?

Although the turbo was a little down on psi relative to normal it felt fine, driving wise. Then it just quit. Coming back on throttle it just was not there.

thoughts, paths to take?

Because the car is running perfectly fine aside from not making boost, I'm going to guess that the wastegate flapper is open. So the flapper itself could be broken, not attached to the actuator? Actuator is broken?

It would take a MAJOR boost leak for you to not see boost and the car would run like crap.

The 11psi you hear of is actually the wastegate working just fine. It's designed to keep the boost at 11psi. It's the boost control solenoid (so just the factory boost controller) that bleeds pressure away from the wastegate to allow for higher boost.

After thinking about it some more, I'd guess that the diaphram inside the actuator was starting to tear, causing you to not boost as high as normal. And then it just tore completely.

that would be nice, if its just the actuator.

if that were the case shouldn't the arm be easy to move?

from the feel of it I'm thinking the flapper is broken somehow.
