Shifter

Anyone have a suggestion on what is the best short shifter for the Evo 8? I have heard both ways on the B&M unit. It seems to be a hack job and truely designed for the Lancer and not the Evo, but can be rigged to work on the Evo.

Thanks for any response.

Josh

I'm going to install the perrin on Sat. From what I understand the B&M is not a short throw shifter ... just a shorter stick ( maybe a small reduction in throw)

There are install threads on both

Is it just me or does the B&M look a LOT shorter than the Perrin one? I had to rotate the Perrin pic to make it upright like the B&M one was.

Am I missing something or is the B&M one actually shorter?

(I hope the pics post up on here)

I see what you mean but the B&M one is laying on the bend so you can't tell total lenght. The Perrin is adjustable for shift throw which is nice. You can see the bottom end is deffinitely longer.
I think B&M just copyed the one in the car and shortened the top by a inch.

Length of the actual unit is of no concern to me i just want a nice short throw.

Perhaps they did just copy the OEM shifter and shorten it. I just want something somewhat near as short as my stock 1G DSM shifter and I will be happy. Anything that is TOO short and I will probably be leaning over to shift. Another plus for me is that the B&M one comes with an aftermarket shift knob. Yes, I know this is a borderline rice comment, but I want an aftermarket shift knob. I have always just hated round ones, so the B&M might feel a little better to me. Back to my original question........is the B&M unit easy to put in the Evo or is it a hack job and truely only intended to fit the Lancer as designed?

From what I have read it is more of a hack job.
If you search for it, everone who has done it had a problem with the plastic collar and had to cut it off to ge the shifter off and get a new one from the dealer. I haven't done it myself so I can't say for sure what the deal is. You could always shoften the top half of the Perrin, I know that sounds rice too but it works with a die and hacksaw. I shortened a Skunk2 before cause it was too tall in the car.

Hmm.........dammit........Now I don't know what to do. I remember when I installed an aftermarket shift knob in my GSX, I was able to jam the thing down way far onto the shaft. It was a Razo and it hat the plastic inserts that were self threading. I was able to drop the overall height of the shifter about 3 inches total (if you remember, the factory 1G GSX shift knobs were tall as hell anyway). But I remember specifically that the shaft sunk in about a good inch into the knob before it even tried to start threading. The reason I remember this so vividly was because one of my friends was there with me.......and as it happened, we both had the same "mind in the gutter" thoughts running through our heads and we both started laughing like Beavis and Butthead (he, he, hehe). Anyway, perhaps just a good old Razo 300 gram shift knob would do the trick for me (in carbon fiber, of course). Carbon fiber makes you faster, right?

Hehehe...

I've got the B&M. Shift throws are slightly shorter than stock and the shifter is shorter. The knob is much better than the stock golf ball POS. Install took me 40 mins. You will have to buy a replacement retainer aka "collar" $14.00 at the stealer. Then apply lots of lube to the retainer area and ball. 2nd and 3rd gear throws (the most important throws) and most noticeable to me where they are much shorter than stock..

I have the Perrin and it can adjust to a very short throw, much shorter than the B&M. The install requires a bit of trial and adjustment, but the final result is far superior to stock. The stock threads are on the Perrin, so you can use the stock knob or many others. I feel the Perrin gives me more confidence while shifting, and I don't have any issues with high rpm shifts.
