Tranny whine in 1st gear only

I have a very loud tranny whine when starting in first from a dead stop between 1K and 2750 rpm. It is not as loud in 2nd gear... My question is, is this the start of the t-case death rally?

it could very well be. have it checked by a tranny shop. it usually doesnt cost that much to run a diagnostics test on it. i dont know about where you live but sometimes you can find coupons for a free tranny check in the newspaper and other little oddball mags

The Transfer case is the loudest usually at about 60-70 mph..... Alot of the 5 speed tranny's are really loud in first gear only.... It sounds like reverse.... I've gone through 2 transfer cases, and it whines anytime the car is in gear rolling, just gets louder as you go faster.... My tranny at this time has a whining noise in first gear, and always has.... Did it just get louder from what it was before? Or has it never made this noise until now? 5 speed, or 6 speed?

Yes is sounds exactly like my SR20 did in reverse. It gets louder in first if you roll into it. But doesn't seem to do it in other gears. Just a tiny bit in 2nd if low rpm. I just happened to notice it as I have been paying more attention to my car and stuff while getting a tune worked out. You know, the proverbial paranoia...

It is a 5 speed EVO IX.

Its normal for Evos to do that. Ive owned 3 Evos and ALL of them did it... The gears are loud by the way they are cut

Mine does it too in 1st gear. From what I read, it's pretty normal

The 1st gear on the Evo is realy loud because the gears are really close to being straight cut.

That is completely false straight cut gears make noise for the same reason helical cut gears make noise.

The reason the transmission makes the noise is something called "transmission error". I don't really feel like rewriting everything I've wrote about it but feel free to look it up.
