boost drop

i need some insight. my car has the cone filter set up with the stock pipe and yesterday i replaced it with a hks hard pipe and filter. i tried to run it this morning and seems that it wouldn't hold boost except on 5th gear. on 2nd, it spikes up to i think 15 or 18psi then goes down, on 3rd it goes up to about 18psi then goes down...but on 5th it would g0 up to 22-23psi then stay there. would that mean i have a leak somewhere? thanks!

What are you using to control boost?

i have a hallman mbc..i just had the car tuned for the set up not too long ago also. so would me replacing the intake with a hard pipe mean i have to get it retuned that's why it's not holding boost?

An intake will affect your tune, but not boost levels like you're describing.

Personally, I have had a lot of problems with my two hallman mbc's. This past week, my brand new one was doing exactly like you described. I took it apart and cleaned it very well. I also lightly greased the ball and spring and tested it and it was back to normal.

Before doing that, just check the obvious things on your car. Make sure the MAF was plugged back in, make sure the BOV is installed correctly, and make sure all IC pipe clamps are tightenened.

ok...i'll try that when i get home. still at work and the wait is killing me. lol! i'll try and double check all the clamps and connections..if that doesn't work, i'll put the old set up with the stock plastic pipe and cone filter and see if it goes back to normal.

I know what you mean man, anytime I have issue's on the way to work, it just kills my whole day. One time, my buddy and I were out in the parking lot taking my car apart!

i have tried a few MBC, but i keep going back to EBC just because i can try to adjust the gain to try to minimize loss of boost through the powerband

Basically, you just take the hoses off the mbc. Then unscrew the nipples on the mbc. Then take some q-tips and a light cleaner and clean everything. Take a paper clip and clean out of the tiny pinhole in the side nipple. Then lightly grease the ball and spring with bearing grease or some kind of light oil. Reassemble and test it out. Just make sure you install it the same way you took it out. Boost source to the top of the mbc, wga to the side of the mbc. The nipple with the pinhole goes in the side!

the stock turbo will bleed boost due to its size. if u were to put it into 5th and put a lot of load on the engine, the boost will hold at the higher level for longer then it will in a lower gear due to the exhaust gases, but will still bleed in the higher RPM range.
