check transmission

How do i check the transmission fluid? I can't seem to find it. Also is the intercooler spray just normal water, distilled water, or some special fluid?

its washer fluid in the intercooler spray bottle. I do not recommend "normal water" or tap water in the spray bottle because of mineral build ups. For the summer you can run distilled water if you like. I just wouldn't recommend tap water.

trans

the trans isn't fluid it's gear oil in the transaxel. You need to get under the car and look for a plug on the side to remove and check the level. The oil should be right at the bottom of opening, just like a manual trans oil check (or rear diff). I haven't been under mine to check but that's the way you check every other transaxel.
It's not a dumb question though, I need to look under mine and check it too.

You really souldn't need to open up the plug to check the tranny fluid (gear oil) unless you notice gear oil seeping from any of the tranny seals.

If you do plan to open the fill hole, be sure to purchase a new crush washer for the plug from the dealer before putting it back in. If you're going that far; it's only another short step to drain and re-fill the tranny with fresh fluid. Doing that removed most of the tranny whine I heard while decelerating.

Where does one get the crush washers for the tranny fluid drain plugs? I called all of the Mitsu dealers in my city and none of them carry it. Further more, they quoted really high prices for these washers if I wanted to order them.

Manual Trans: $4.64
Transfer case: $1.60
Rear Diff: $1.26

What sizes are these washers? Are they available elsewhere?

I don't remember the washer being a crush washer. It's just a flat piece with a slight "seat" on one side for the bolt head. I just reused the original washers when I changed my fluid.

So in reality those washers are gaskets and not crush washers like the oil drain pan? Excellent, that will save me from having to purchase at the crazy prices that the dealer parts department was quoting me.

thanks!
