Should I get a IX Turbo?

Should I get a IX Turbo?

Currently have the stock VII turbo on my car. Brought it to a shop for ECUFlash tuning...the mechanic commented that the spool up was slow.

I am currently runnning a peak of 1.4 bar, and taper to 1.3 bar....and about 300 WHP. I was pretty happy with this power, but I do notice a bit of lag.

The car is being set up to run trackdays, and throttle response is a major concern.

Anyway, we removed the hoses, and also discovered a considerable amount of grease in the hose right outside the turbo, going to the intercooler....

Also, hand turning the fan inside the turbo feels a little harder than normal...

Anyway, there is a IX turbo in another shop that is available, and I've been having a hard time figuring out what exactly I am buying....all I know is that the IX turbo is better and spools earlier...are there different types of stock IX turbos out there? Should I get it or should I just tune with the stock turbo I ahve now?

TIA...

the VIII turbo will spool faster due to the 9.8cm housing and unless u can get the IX turbo for cheap it's not worth it because the gains will be minimal

Really? On a 9.8 hotside, switching to a IX turbo will give you ~25whp. Most people pay more for cams than for a IX turbo and get the same amount of power. It's a great upgrade.

Get the IX turbo, makes a tad more power and spool is excellent. It will not be faster than a VII or VIII turbo IN GOOD CONDITION, but perhaps your turbo is busted.

Sorry for the very newb question....

The turbo on my 7 is a 16g? and the turbo on a 9 is a 20g? Is that a correct statement? That will determine the size of the turbo?

From what I gather, the hotside size will determine the spool efficiency right? The 7 has a smaller hotside than the 9 which has 10.5...correct?

Yeah I have lag on the 7 turbo....the dyno shows full boost to be a little over 3500 RPMs...but dyno runs are done with full throttle from the bottom RPM of 3rd gear....what bugs me and the guy tuning my car now is when you are driving along on light throttle, at 4000 RPM for example...when you floor the gas, it takes some time to spool up to full boost....he said it should be instantaneous.

Anyway, since I am still a newb, to me the car feels ok...but of course knowing that the boost can come much faster if I upgrade to a 9 turbo...and having one available for a fair price...I am tempted to just go for it. The added WHP is just icing...I am happy with 300 WHP for the track I am using it for.

Yes, that is the question I have I guess...is my turbo busted? Tuner can't say for sure...he said:

1) the oil in the hose is NOT normal
2) Rotating the fan inside is a little harder than normal
3) Boost comes slower than it should be
4) removing the hose to the wastegate only still gave 1.45 BAR, and not 1.9 BAR as it is supposed to...

But then, he said if I was perfectly fine with it, before taking it to the shop...then it should be fine...what I don't know won't hurt me...haha but then now I am beginning to know....and if the turbo is on its way, why wait? But I guess I want to know for a certain degree of accuracy if the turbo is busted already.

There is also one thing I noticed while DD the car....whenever I reach a stoplight, after a few seconds idling...I hear an almost farting sound coming from the engine bay one time, each time I stop for a minute or so.

Would a busted turbo have this sound, like it is being prematurely stopped because of maybe a bearing that is not as efficient anymore?

no they are all 16g turbos...the IX have the 10.5 hotside which is bigger and makes slightly more power, the 9.8 hotside due to being smaller will spool faster...but like everyone else said unless you can get the IX turbo for cheap its really not worth it

I have a stock IX turbo that I just pulled off my car with 11,500 miles on it in perfect condition if you are interested. I went 11.56 @ 118.81 mph at 26 psi on pump gas with this turbo and made 344 whp & 345 ft/lbs on Buschur Racings mustang dyno.

I'd like to get $550 shipped....PM me if interested!!

Your spool will not be faster with a IX turbo. The IX turbo has a larger cold side, but the MIVEC engine helps it with the spool. There's some individual who upgrade their VIII turbo to the IX and they did said that there's a little lag to it.

Might want to take a look at the TME turbo if you're looking for quick spool.

I noticed zero difference in spool going from an VIII w/ 10.5 hotside to an IX w/ 10.5 hotside. The gains were measurable, both in the seat of my pants as well as my data logs.

Well...I did it! Finally got the IX turbo...

Basically, we dynoed my car, and the boost was really poor, as compared to older Dyno graphs which I have...full boost arrives at a sluggish 5500 RPM, and Boost at 3500 RPM is not even half of what it was the first time I dynoed it.

So I plunked down the cash to buy a IX turbo...it had a 10.5 compared to the 9.8 that the stock had. moved my turbo outlet from the old turbo to the new one, hooked it up and ECUFlash tuned it. The results could not be better than I had hoped for.

I used to do 300 WHP on a dynapack with 1.4 - 1.3 Boost...now with the new IX turbo...where I instructed the tuner to tune for 300 WHP only, I was able to get 307 WHP with only 1.2-1.1 BAR of boost! My goal was to tune to 300WHP with the most reliabile setup as I can...and since before, i was always worried about the 1.4BAR of boost I had ruining my turbo.

The boost curve is much better than my old VII turbo with 9.8...possibly because it was already on its way out when I first dynoed it...the boost comes in at about the same time, but the pressure gets higher much earlier.

Very happy with the car now...and I also think the bigger hotside made the exhaust more free flowing...
