Good article. I use the GC in my sentra and have never had an issue - coming from mobil 1 which would get so thin it would leak past the rings.

The best part is Autozone has some really good sales on castrol every now and again. They recently had a sale where you got a mobil 1 filter and 5 quarts of any syntec for $26. I returned the filter for $11 and that is the best $15 oil change you can get!

im about to try the new SSO from amsoil. got a wix filter and im ready to feel and hear the difference in my newly built motor.

ps. has little over 1000 miles on it right now with regular oil.
pss. the new SSO is 0w30 which is said to act like a 10w30 as well as a 0w30

The first few oil changes I put Mobil 1 in mine and since then I've been running GC in my car. I've always like it and seems to be doing well with 86,000 of hard driven miles.

I am doing a little more checking into this.

From what I have found out so far is that it is not a bad oil. In some "tests" the AMSOIL edged out the GC. The oil used was AMSOIL 0W-30, the old Formula TSO it looks like.

AMSOIL reformulated the 0W-30 about 8 months ago and has increased the TBN which is the ability of the oil to Neutralize acidity. Acidity comes from oil being contaminated by combustion by products and water vapor.

The other additives packs in the new SSO were also beefed up.

I noticed a couple posts and see these type quite often about "I've used xyz oil and never noticed a problem"

Key word, NOTICED.... You have no idea what is happening internally, Rust, Corrosion, Wear, Heat...

I am going to see if I can find an MSDS for the GC... It may give a little more insight into what the oil actually is... I find it hard to believe that it is a 100% Synthetic @ $6.50 per qt.

SECTION VI: PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Boiling Point: ND Specific Gravity (Water=1): 0.86
Vapor Pressure (mm.Hg. @ 25 °C): ND Vapor Density (Air=1): ND
Percent Volatiles: Negligible Evaporation Rate (BuAc=1): < 0.1
Freezing Point: -22°F to -40°F (-30°C to -40°C)
pH-Value: NA Viscosity Range @ 100° C, cSt.: 5W-20 5.6 to 9.3
5W-30 9.3 to 12.5 10W-30 9.3 to 12.5
Odor Threshold: NA 10W-40 12.5 to 16.3 20W-50 16.3 to 21.9
0W-30 9.3 to 12.5 5W-50 16.3 to 21.9
Coefficient of Water/Oil Distribution: ND 5W-40 12.5 to 16.3
Appearance, Odor & Physical State: Clear, amber liquid; mild petroleum odor

This didn't lay out how I copied it, but the line I highlighted indicates that this is nothing more than a Hydro-Cracked oil.

As I said, a good OIL..... Just not Good Enough...

AMSOIL will pour at -60 plus
