Change 6 speed gearbox to 5 speed?
Change 6 speed gearbox to 5 speed?
Hi
I currently drive a 2006, 6 speed Evo 9. I have modified it with an ETS 3076R turbo kit and a tune from Mellon tuning in the US.
I have never really been impressed with how sticky the gears are at high rpm when the car was stock but now with the extra power (460 awhp) changing gears is no fun at all. Changes always feels notchy and slow.
I am really looking for a rifle like action gear change so I can Autox with more confidence. I also plan on getting around 600 awhp + in the near future with bigger mods.
Can anyone please tell me if it possible to just put the stock 5 speed (Evo 8) gearbox in there with the stock 5 speed shifter. Also is the 5 speed good for 600 awhp and does it shift well (fast and smooth)?
The other better option is to buy Shepards 5 speed ultimate ratio transmition with the conversion kit but that kind of quality is quite pricey and I only want to do that if I have too.
Appreciate the input.

Plenty of us have swapped in a 5spd for out 6spds. You didn't find any of our threads talking about it?
You can do it, however, I would not bet that it's the 6spd's fault that you have sticky gears. My 6spd shifted like butter on its own, but different clutches behaved differently. My ACT caused high rpm lockout, but my Exedys have allowed me to shift lightning fast at any time. I had 250 drag passes (plus lots of autox and road racing) on my 6spd and still didn't have any notchiness like you're describing. It eventually blew out 4th gear while road racing, since we know 4th (and 5th/6th) is very small/weak. I only say this, because you may have some other issue causing your notchiness that may not go away with a 5spd whether it's the clutch, fluid, or pedal adjustment.
Shep did my 5spd swap, and it's been great every since.

hey Grant have you tried adjusting the pedal yet? the clutch may be dragging a bit, that'll definitely cause the difficult shifts and general notchy feeling. My exedy twin was fantastic in my 5 speed until the end of it's life when it started getting notchy on shifts. Adjusting the pedal gave it more life and shifted like new again but eventually I ran out of adjustment and simply put in a fresh clutch.
id run the 6 speed until you break it.
Once you've made your decision to go 5 speed then i would just buy a shep built one with the conversion kit. You cant use the 6 speed cables for the 5 speed shifter and trans. installing the conversion kit only takes about an hour if you take your time.
As far as ratios go, just get the evo 8 ratios. It'll be fine for what you use it for

Running the Exedy Twin helped improve my shift quality immensely compared with the stock clutch. The lighter the clutch discs, the quicker the syncros can react and the smoother the shifting.

Thanks for the info guys.
I will give Mellon and Warrtalon's suggestion a try. What relief it would be just to adjust the pedal a few turns and gain some more life out of my Exedy stage 1 organic
Chris I read about that fresh Titlon. Makes me scared, you’re going to break the drag strip with that new clutch and your DR's!

Problem solved.
Hey
Big thanks to Mellon and Warrtalon's.
I adjusted the pedal until I could only see about 2 lines of thread (had about 5 lines to start with) and no more high rpm lockout. Gear changes feel way smoother and are also quicker too.
Super thanks!

I've got a set of slicks on the way Grant
The exedy twin HD was pretty fantastic until the very end of it's life and had no problem holding ~500awhp in fact when I pulled it out there was barely any friction material left but that sucker never did slip one time.
