overkill?

Is a fully built BR motor (stg 3 shortblock, stg 3 head, and fully built internals) overkill for the FP Red? I want a fully built motor but I also want the FP Red. Whats a good compromise?

i would say yes, the powerband of the fp red would not reach the potential of that block and head, thats like a 800whp+ setup for a 500whp turbo

Never overkill. The more you "over build" the less likely you'll pull it back out 5 times to upgrade. The reds love boost, with a fully built motor you can run some high boost. Do it!

I ask b/c I have reason to beleave I blew a piston ring. So I figure it's a good time to just start from scratch.

sounds like a good time to me. i just lost my motor yesterday on the way to the track. cyl. 1 wall cracked pretty good and my rod broke. i really gotta start from scratch. you should do it now when your crank and block is still good. save some money. lol

Thanks for all of your input. I can't wait to come back from Iraq and start the build.

not overkill at all, better to be safe than sorry and you can always upgrade to a bigger turbo when the red gets old.

No way is it overkill.. With the potential of 140+ trap speeds for an FP RED.. Who wants to be limited to 500hp with a red when they can make 600whp?? We are doing a Buschur 2.3L + Red this month.. I think thats the ultimate setup.. The Red doesnt make much power over 8k and the Stroker is limited to 8500 so the low end it will bring into the equation will be awesome.. Ill keep you guys posted!!

Personally I believe it's over kill because you have a motor that's capable of 800+ HP and your going to put a stock based turbo on it... You should definatly push the motor to the limits. Just my $.02

Id rather run a motor capable of 800hp at 600hp so it lasts much longer than run a stock motor to 500+ and put a rod thru it.. Just my .02..

Btw.. There is no in between. Buschur doesnt offer a motor for 650hp.. Stage III is rated at 800hp.. Why not have the peace of mind when your barely pushing it at 600hp??
