Upgrading Evo 9 trans to Evo 8 4th and 5th gearing
I would leave 5th gear alone.... you would have much better accelleration using the EVO 8 4th gear going into the EVO 9 5th gear as it would already be in its sweet spot.
The EVO 9 3rd gear is also a little too short and you could benefit from going with the EVO 8 3rd gear.
The ultimate tranny is EVO 9 ---- 1,2&5 with EVO 8 ---- 3&4.
I would not even consider the taller 5th gear or double sycros as there is no reason to bang 5th gear.

P.S- only suggested the 5th gear for better mpg purposes because everytime im in the highway in 5th Im always around the 4K area and i'm sure less revs puts less stress into the car.
The difference in top end is 10mph but you will have better acceleration with the 9 5th gear. If you are doing highway pulls to 160+ mph I really don't know what to say about that.
The difference between the evo 8 and evo 9 5th gears probably wont make a difference in mileage. Definitely not enough to justify the cost of the gear swap.

Really don't know...last time I went to the track they had me drive right through the waterbox so when I launched I spun all first and some of second gear and I hit the 8200 rev limiter in 4th @ 119 before crossing the beams.
So with a good launch I should be around mid 120's or more.

Then you will not need to shift into 5th gear at the track with your current setup with an 8200rpm rev limit. Another thing that will help you is using a slightly taller tire. I recommend the Nitto NT555R. It will give you an extra 2mph to play with in all gears as apposed to the stock tire size.

Just a little update...sending the trans back to shep this Tuesday and I've decided to just switch to the Evo 8 3rd and 4th and keep the Evo 9 5th in there. Also going to double synchro 5th gear so its more forgiving on hard 4-5 shifts.
If I did put the Evo 8 5th in there it would still bog so whats the point.

this was exactly what he said:
The difference internally (the amount of friction on the synchro) is much less with the Evo 9 5th, = less wear & tear on the synchro, thus longer life.
So, I guess I will stick with my buzzy evo 9 5th gear
More so I was looking for a drop in RPMs, but according to Shep the evo 8 5th gear will wear the synchros more than the evo 9 5th gear?
