no need to tape it, it should be fine without it. I didn't tape mine and runs fine. My only gripe about this is the "womp" noise it makes sometimes when you hit the gas kinda hard or let off. Other than that it's a pretty cool simple mod. Hell, the intake sucking in air sounds pretty cool without the cover, I can't wait to hear my AEM with the HKS SSQ

Guys, this is a little ghetto. The sheer embarassment from opening your hood with the paper element exposed would be enough to make me hide in a corner.

Why do this? You're making the cool airbox a hot air box, because thefunnel isn't sending encased air to the MAF any longer.

BOO to this idea!

But it wont "hurt" it to play with it a little, will it? I'll take mine off just to see what it sounds like the put the box back on...I assume it won't hurt anything to take it off for a little bit then put it back on...

OH NOS! GOD FORF'NING BID PEOPLE MESS AROUND WITH THEIR EVO.

please, embarassment? Driving a 30k EVO is enough to nullify the !SHEER EMBARASSMENT! of not having your airfilter top on. Christ almighty. OH NOS THERE'S NO COVER FOR YOUR AIRFILTER!

It's really not a big deal, if anything, it helps. Give it a shot, oh wait, it's too embarassing.

I drove around today with the cover off and I have a k&n dropin filter with a forge recirc bov. Sounds real nice but thats about it. It was great hearing the whoosh but after a while I decided to crank the music up and forgot about it. I'll be putting the cover back on tomorrow. I guess if I get bored one day, this can be some entertainment.

Its ghetto, not anchored, and it is NOT helping performance. Have fun being a slow ricer.

Who cares if it's ghetto? Are you the same person who would spend $8000 on a CF spark plug wire cover? If you get embarrassed over not having a filter box cover, you should probably be working on your self-esteem rather than your car.

Sweeeet... duct tape mods! How about a little contest to see who can make the biggest hp gain using only duct tape?

I'm curious though, how much can this possibly throw off the a/f ratio at any given rpm point? It's not much more air than normal, being the stock filter element and all, and still keeping the stock plumbing underneath.
Pulling the cover off makes the a/f a little richer.

Right but it's still controlled so the ratio is still proportional, correct?

Yes, and I picked up 8 hp on the dyno just by removing the lid. Of course this is with the hood open.

Damn, 8hp? Can you post the graphs?

I don't have the dyno graph comparing the cover on and off scanned. I get it scanned in and post it tomorrow. The graph I have shows a/f between the two and a 4th gear pull compared to 3rd gear pulls. Btw, 4th gear pulls run richer then 3rd gear pulls. Also the 8hp I'm talking about are peak #'s.
