No webguy, you're a slow ricer that is an embarassment. DAMN YOU, YOU'RE AN EMBARASSMENT TO THE COMMUNITY!

Noize seriously, I could care less of someone's opinion on an online forum, but attacking someone cause of being bored and fiddling with their car is pretty lame. Lemme just comment on this and then i'm done.

"Keep posting nonsense; I'm laughing at you. Maybe if you pull your turbo heatshield, it will SOUND LOUDER and give you a super JDM weight reduction, riceboi. Have fun getting pulled by stock Evos. "

rofl, I fail to see in any way taking off an airbox cover condones me as a ricer. I'm still driving a 30k evo with a few other mods to it and I pull consistant mid/low 13's at the track. But wait, i'm gonna lose to a stock evo cause my airbox is off. MINUS 20 HP.

Get a clue, brother.

I think the only one getting laughed at, is you. I never once claimed that this mod is SO SUPER AWESOME! All i said was I was bored and decided to mess around with my car since I'm waiting for my intake to come.

WTF does the fact that you have a 30k evo have anything to do with you being a ricer. Dont be such a tool. You could have a 911 turbo and still be a ricer.

And mid to low 13s with a few mods is pretty sad, unless of course you decided to add neon lights, then I would understand

I haven't been able to find one anywhere near Rochester, if you do that would be VERY, VERY GOOD!

damn, whole lot of ********* on this board.

Sorry that i'm not a prostar track driver and i'm DEEPLY sorry that my few mods (check my profile) didn't do much to lower my times. I never said I was a great driver nor did I ever claim my mods did much to do so, but whatever.

I see your point about rice, but you also have to understand rice is typically referred to cars with pointless **** done to it to help, or in this case, hinder its performance. I really don't think there's a true 100% definition of "rice" considering it IS slang so it CAN be interpreted differently, but whatever.

I dont kow about all this going back and forth about this But I tried this same mod and my car did sound better but it did feel slower with my butt dyno and yes I did leave it off for a day or two to see if the comp would compensate for the increased airflow but nothing changed just slower. I would also like to see some real times I dont think a dyno would really be a good way to judge but hey wich ever works for me so if you get them please post.

Just wanted to update ya'll...

I put the box cover back on yesterday. Two reasons:

1) it was going to POUR rain and I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any water issues (scary thoughts)

2) I wanted to get another comparison of the stock feel/sound

The sound is much quieter. No more deep, low growl that you typically get with any intake. I was surprised as just how much less you hear the engine breathe.

The engine FEELS smoother. It might just be my brain not hearing that extra sound so it seems smoother, but it also seems that throttle changes are smoother. The car bucks less at low rpms in 1st gear, interestingly.

All in all I don't feel like this is a really worthwhile mod. It makes a great sound and the factory d/v sounds 10x better without the cover, but I don't know if it's worth it for the worries. I'll just wait for my hks thanks.

I'm really confused on the difference between removing airbox
box vs intake like Buschur's...???
http://www.buschurracing.com/EVO8_airfilter1_large.jpg

Both suck in hot air from hot engine bay... (Buschure claims 4whp
gain from the intake) Actually, removing oem intake cover will
be better since it retains the stock snorkel...

Wouldn't both prone to get the filter wet from rain?????

Does anyone with intake having the same problem as webguy's
open oem air box??

Thanks,

JT-KGY, couple of things:

1) only reason I was worried about water was because of the box-type design of the factory airbox. A conical filter setup will be much less likely to collect water which makes it through the snorkel, around the weatherstripping, and up through the bottom of the engine bay.

2) water isn't a huge concern anyhow because you have miles of intercooler piping and the I/C itself before the water even reaches the throttle body (also don't forget the turbo compressor side).

3) it matters not if it's hot or cold air, it all evens out in the end anyhow.

4) a conical filter probably flows a hell of a lot better than the square OEM one, not to mention providing better funneling of the air into the vortex that your compressor fins are creating.

Just my thoughts... I have an HKS RS on the way so I am looking forward to hearing my d/v once again (and that nasty WOT snarl only an intake can provide ).

I see your points..
Been thinking about an intake for a bit now... but after hearing
stories of intake causing a/f problems of MAF, I feel that even
an intake needs some dyno time to really be sure it is beneficial
for your car...

BMW was a lot easier... slap on an intake (homemade or not)...
it's going to make more hp...

For sure, BMW restricts their intakes for noise suppression. Damn the masses!

This would be false, lower inlet temps will yield lower charged air temps before and after the intercooler.

Turbo-Weapon, it has been discussed over and over. The general consensus is that the compressor side of the turbo is still hot as **** and therefore the air that passes though there before the i/c etc. is still warm. Hence the i/c to begin with.

One of these days I'm gonna do some testing with some temperature probes and intake designs to find out the real deal.

Your general consensus would be 100% incorrect. I have logged intake air temps with my ECU data logger and I have an intake temp gauge plumbed into my t-body elbow. My filter sits in the opening where the passenger side fog light use to sit in my dsm. I have logged both under hood intake temps and intake temps in the current location.

How exactly did this general consensus that you speak of. Come to this conclusion? It is very very incorrect. Im just curious how you came to this conclusion, because its obviously not based on any factual data.

Cooler intake temps will give you a steeper timing curve and aid against pre-ignition detonation. Again this has been proven many many times.

Again this is one of those things that has already been proven Many years ago. No additional testing is needed. Unless you just have some free time to kill.

It has been discussed, do a search.

Also why is it that no one on this board seems to know how to properly debate a topic without making sharp comments? Am I being overly sensitive? Someone slap me.
