oil temp gauge went crazy

ok so i was stopped at a light and the temp gauge went up passed the H, it didnt go up slow. it went up in chunks. but as i started moving it went back to jus below half. it hasnt gone back up, dont smell anything nor see anything wrong...could it be be a loose/bad sensor?

exactly which guages are you talking about?
Is it the oem MR oil temp guage down by the radio?

Or is it the coolant temp guage in the speedo cluster, since you mentioned the H.

The one in the speedo cluster is the engine coolant temp guage not oil..

If it's this one, check your coolant level in the radiator and overflow tank when it cools off, "Dont open if it's Hot".

Please elaborate a little more on which guage you are referring to.

i have a similar problem with my stock coolant gauge...it reads cold when cruising on the highway and right in the middle when street driving.

if thats the case its probably the coolant fan. you should check if it turns on. just start the car and keep it on idle. keep it running probably around 5-10min. in that time the temps should be running on normal operating temps and that fan should be intermittently turn on and off to maintain the temps. the reason its not going up if you are cruising is because the wind hitting the radiator at cruising speed is enough to cool it most of all because the weather is cold right now.

If it went past the H that might indicate a problem but if it went back down before moving again that is normal.

When the car is cold check to see if your radiator is full and the fluid is clean.

That is a classic indicator of a thermostat that is stuck open. The problem with that is it can drop coolant temp to a point whereby the ECU goes into 'warmup mode', which will significantly richen the fuel mixture (back to open loop) and that leads to all sorts of issues (reduced fuel economy being one of them).

If the coolant temperature gauge shows a significant drop in temp to the colder part of the gauge when on the freeway, change the thermostat.
