Should I change oil or wait a week?
OK strange question.
I am about to change my oil for the 21st time on my 06 IX. issue is next week its supposed to be 30-40 below zero. this is my daily driver, so it will be driven. oil is changed every 3k no matter what. thinking of the cold, am i better letter the slightly used old oil perhaps a little thinner in during the harsh cold, or change it for thicker new oil. I have only ever ran Mobil 1 10w30 in summer and 5W30 in the winter. I am not too concerned either way, but am curious if anyone has any thoughts. its not like the oil in the car now is all that bad, but i think you may see my quandry as its going to be a bad **** next week temp wise.

most synthetic oils can last 5k easily
I had my last fill with mobil 1 tested by blackstone labs at 4k and the results said the oil saw minimum wear was just starting to become broken down

Those AEM coldstarts sound traumatic, huh? No, I just watch the oil pressure light when I crank the engine in the morning and it goes off noticeably sooner with the 0W-40 than it did with 10W-30 Mobil1. I realize that it is not very scientific testing.
Also, my ticky lifter noise went away with the 0W-40.
I don't run the thin stuff in the summer though. Also, I don't rev my engine much over 6800 and am always short-shifting. So, that is why I don't figure I need the thick stuff in the winter.
Finally, I'll admit that I started to use Mobil1 0W-40 originally because it was the factory fill in my buddy's cool little twin turbo S4 Audi.

let me know if you guys need anything, will hook you up
yeah but we're in the the northern midwest so we're used to it. damn it's gonna be -40 next week in wisc. i didn't check the weather i bet it'll hit us over here in MN before you. awwwwww. i guess i'll have to wear a jacket,
0W will provide the best cold start ability and when you are getting down to -40 a ptroleum oil is a firm gel and provides 0 lubrication at those temps.
Without looking, I believe Mobil 1 Extended Performance has about a -48 pour point, AMSOIL SSO has a -60 Pour Point..
If you buy the Mobil 1 EP, 5W-30 even, you should still be able to start or buy their 0W-20 to ride the cold out.
