This has been a problem for awhile and its getting frustrating. My car started grinding going into 3rd and 5th gear earlier this month. I thought, no big deal, I'm an idiot I roasted my synchros. I took it into the shop and had the gears/synchros for those gears replaced. Got the car back. The third gear still maybe horrible noises going into gear. Took it back. Rebuilt that gear again, synchros, gears, all the other little bits and pieces. Got it back. It still grinds....

I can get it to go into gear smoothly, but it has to be slowly placed into gear at low RPMS. Anything above 2500 RPMs or faster than a super slow shift will make it grind. (If you hold it not quite into gear it will eventually slide in w/o grinding)

So, what is wrong with it? Could it be a fluid issue? A clutch adjustment issue? (If so how would you move the clutch to fix it?) Or maybe a shifter related issue (linkages or something in there...?)

I'm really at a loss for what to do at this point and may be making up potential causes but if you know what's happening I'd really appreciate some info...

 

dude i have a tre stage 3 trans, i am just bolt ons and my 3rd 5th gears grind!!!!

 

So it's just something I should deal with?

 

my third gear grinds too, unless I slowly shift into it

 

my fifth does the same thing also it sucks... hopefully you can get it fixed im bringing mine in soon to be looked at

 

Same thing as described by the OP is happens to my 3rd gear. Its the most annoying thing ever. You hear it and can slightly feel it in the shift.

 

try adjusting your clutch engagement.

 

My 5th grinds REALLY bad if I run it hard through 4th. I adjusted the clutch pedal and will try it again tomorrow. 3rd is also a bit notchy. I called my local dealer, he said they would void my tranny warranty if I brought it in with my Cat Back exhaust installed. lol I am going to try some Redline MTC tranny fluid if the clutch pedal adjustment doesn't help. I will update as I find something out.

 

well my 5th used to grind but when 5 starts to go out 3rd will do the same maybe cuz they share (I THINK NOT SURE) the same syncro, well when that happened to me i still had warranty took it to mitsu and they replaced all my syncro's and 3,4,and 5th gears.... thanks to my warranty sux its voided now lol

 

I feel ur pain SHEP TRANS installed 1st day,,,3rd gear grind.....

Mine doesn't grind, but it's a pain to get into 3rd and i've adjusted my clutch like ten times! I'm going to try switching to a ss clutch line and removing the clutch restrictor pill. I'll let you guys know if it helps.

 

Try some b&g Syncromesh.
