Grinding sound in neutral...

I have an appointment to bring my car into the dealership on Tuesday but figured I'd search around here for a bit first...

My problem is pretty straightforward...I notice a grinding sound at the front end of the car, usually around 3k-4k rpm. At first I thought it was a wheel bearing or the clutch, but it does this even when the car is stationary and in neutral. Gently rev to 3k and you hear what sounds like metal scraping against metal.

The car runs fine but I'm hesitant to take it out too much until I have it looked at. She's a 2006 Evo IX MR with about 42k miles, stock clutch, fresh oil, and the only major mods are what's found in the Buschur stage 1 and 2 kits.

Without a camera I can't actually get the sound online...but does anyone have any ideas?

try this. keep your car in neutral and hold the clutch in. then rev the car. if no noise, then its your throw out bearing.

Just tried it. It seems to make the noise at 3k with the clutch in AND out. Either way it starts making the sound.

Video

You can hear it at 6 seconds and 12 seconds in.

wow that is a weird noise. kind of sounds like something is just vibrating onto something while it hits 3k. you could also try to pin point where its coming from by having a very very very very long screwdriver. probably the length of your whole arm. and with the handle you put it to your ear and place the tip of the screwdriver somewhere on the motor. like place it at different spots of the tranny or motor and see where the sound travels through the screwdriver to your ear the most. kind of works like a doctors stethoscope.

Sounds like a heatshield is rattling. That is a common issue. Check driveshaft and the exhaust shields under the car.

Thanks for the tips guys...looks like I need to remember the ol' "Keep It Simple Stupid" concept.

Turns out one of the bolts holding down the exhaust manifold heat shield was loose. I took that off, went for a spin, and there's no noise whatsoever.
