Weak spark - any test for coils?

Ill give the main details.

62,500 miles on car - presumed stock coils
11.3 AFR during pull
NEW BPR8es plugs - gapped at .023
New OEM wires
7800 RPM redline
93 octane only - no meth.

If I run 18psi. No breaking up at all. Pulls hard to redline.

If I run 20psi - a few blips on the pull usually around 6500+ --Blips start after passing 18psi

If I run 22 psi - it sputters and barely pulls though the rpms. - chaos starts after passing 20psi

I figure it has GOT to be weak coils. It sounds like its only one coil tho -- as it its a complete brick wall -- just pops and bucks like crazy.

Is there a test for the coils? Aside from switching or swapping coils with someone else? I could have sworn that with my setup.. stock coils should have nooo problem lighting .. I just cant figure it out.

You have any evo buddies near by that you could swap their coils on your car and see what happens? Thats a pretty easy test...

=) i know that will work. i just need to meet up with some one.. I was just curious if there was some way to test them via volt meter?

What actually causes them to become weak?

Old age...weather the car is driven in could have something to do with them dying on you earlier then other evo owners...I see your running a Red...depending on the boost and power you are putting down, maybe with almost 63k miles they just can't cut it anymore...PM Craig @ Sparktech about his non cdi COP setup...I am running it on my stock turbo car and I love it...pulls MUCH better till redline...

Ill pass on sparktech. If I buy any non-cdi - it will be spoolin's setup. Same product - half the cost.

At 22 psi - i would bet I am at or around 300whp. Stock coils should do that in their sleep.

My setup is ready for more-- but with it not lighting.. its pointless to turn the boost up.

I have been having misfire issues and I swapped my cam sensor and it went away. I would try that. Turbotrix also stated that on a stock ecu a bad cas will cause misfires.

Good luck.

well - it only happens at high boost.

Tomorrow i have another 8 comming over.. we will be swapping parts all day. I will start with the .026 gap.

Worth a shot.

you bet. Coils are weak. Plain and simple. I drove it with my coils in it at 20 and then again with 22 psi to confirm the studder.

I then replaced them with a set of coils out of an 03 evo with the same miles on it. BAM - 22 psi was strong til redline.

Did not change plugs, or wires. Just simply swapped out both coils, and it idled, started, ran and cruised smoother.

Figures.

No need for that cold of a plug with your setup, especially in the colder air. That might be the cause as well. Go to the 7es gapped at .24
