small hole in axel boot
small hole in axel boot
So when i was doing my clutch change this last end i notice that there was a tiny hole the front passenger axel boot. there is still grease in there. Should I be very concerned? is there a simple fix for this or do i really need a new axel? Thanks
you can buy new boots but the labor to change them is a biiiiiiiitch. u would have to remove the entire half shaft and use a special tool to clamp the new boot on. u would have to do some searching or get input from other members, but u may be able to just patch the hole. even if u successfully patch it up, thats more of a tmeporary solution. i dont think there's any easy way out. i just replaced both of my front axles because the inner cv boots were leaking on both shafts. its easier to replace the entire shaft than to replace a boot. goodluck man
I tore one of mine, I think with parts and labor it was somewhere around $250-300. If you are going to patch it (I would recommend you just get it fixed...) you need something flexible and realistically nothing will really work except, well the boot, so you might as well use some duct tape...

I've never changed an axle boot on my Evo but I did a few on my DSM and never thought it was that big of deal. The boots for my DSM were pricey through Mitsu but aftermarket boots were available at reasonable cost. You do need a special pliers for the clamp.
So I went to one of our local high end shops and the guy there said it wasnt to bad and put some of this black rubber stuff on it as a patch. What do you guys think?
yeah seems fine to me. I have the exact same rubber compound that adheres to materials with heat and a bit of pressure. its hard to explain. I would say just keep a close eye on it until you have the money to fix the boot the right way. After all the boot (rubber part) does not rotate it just extends and contracts with you steering left and right. best of luck
