Haha, wait you think just patching the hole in the TC is going to fix it? Obviously something inside the housing had to go or stretch in order to actually crack it, unless you hit something that cracked it. I would first check the fluid and see if theres any chunks or metal shavings in there, or if there is any fluid at all in there with a crack in it. Then I would take it and send it into shep and see what he says, chances are a gear went or it threw a chunk of metal and cracked the housing. Patching it will do no good, unless something bounced up and broke it from the outside. Even then I would replace and not patch it, just sounds shoddy to me.

Oh and FWIW, chances are your launch did it in, especially if that is when the problem started. So it is a problem INSIDE the transfer case and the assembly is shot, not just the housing. It needs rebuilt or replaced. If you are going to race and launch it, you need to get it upgraded anyways, it will only last for so long. Yours just decided to take a dump when you did that first launch with the clutch. **** happens.

^exactly. To people saying "I know others that abused it straight away," of course you did. Recommendation is to break it in while taking it easy. Is it going to absolutely cause an issue if you don't follow recommendations? Would breaking it in properly have not caused this issue? No one really knows. I would still follow recommendations for a new clutch install.

Same thing with anything. Properly turn off your computer or you could suffer data loss. Is it absolutely going to happen? Hell no, I've done it a million times. But, I have also had data loss, so it can happen if you don't follow recommendations.

The cracked t-case "plug" and all will be good sounds fish, OP.

did you build boost when you launched or was it just rpm rev?

Launching on a brand new clutch isnt going to break the clutch, it will cause premature wear, and will most likly glaze the disc/pp. It will however break other drivetrain components...

sounds like something in the t-case gave out. By welding the crack, you will not fix the problem.

dude i hope u figure it out...i have a noise in my car now... i think its the tcase as well. but the noise isnt loud enough yet where im gonna worry about it.. well since u broke ur tcase at lest u know ur clutch is grabbing... thats y they upgrade the casing bolts on the tcase when u send it in.. it just keeps the stuff inside the tcase from expanding!!!

i doubt if he broke the clutch in this wouldnt happen. lol. it would of just postponed the lifespan of the tcase till after the breakin..

Will see what happens. The mechanic is paying for this so.. He thinks the crack was done by his helper when he was taking out the tranny, everytinhg inside looks "fine" suppously. If this doesn't fix the problem he will replace the tcase.

Yeah, sounds like a reasonable guy. Good luck, take a picture of the crack and we can probably tell you if the weld will help. Most likely not, but worth a shot. And, you have to ask yourself this question, wonder how long that patch will work? You went in with a brand new transfer case and came out with one that whines and was cracked, are you satisfied with that?

To be honest though, I really think you did the most damage during your launch. If there wasn't a noise and then you dropped it at 5000 rpm and after you heard the whine, or felt vibrations, then you caused it, or at least significantly contributed to it. Good luck.

i think i did contribute to the problem, but the noise was very minimal when i left the shop 30 miles later got louder and definately worse when i did my little launch. I think that the crack was there all along but as i was driving most of the fluid was squirted out and causing the noise to get louder. At least my mechanic is a decent guy.

double-negatives rocking my brain right now. If you read my post I stated that no one really knows what would have happened. Regardless of the break-in period I agree that it sounds like this would have happened at some point.

Good to hear about the honest mechanic and this working out in some form or another. Good luck, OP!

Make sure your mechanic puts the right fluid in your tcase and tranny. They are both DIFFERENT
