Evo 8 Turbo life?

Anyone know about how many miles the stock evo 8 turbo starts losing power?

I am around 88k miles now.

The turbo pulls well most of the time, however there are times I feel like it makes it spooling noise but isn't doing anything at all.

My guess is that your turbo is fine but you might have a few boost leaks or maybe are in need of new spark plugs.

When a turbo usually goes bad its because the bearing that the wheels spin on gets shot. Keep in mind that bearing is spinning at XXX,XXX RPM's when at full boost. Easy way to check is to take off the intake from the compressor side of the turbo. Grab a hold of the shaft and wiggle it. There should be no shaft play noticeable in the turbo. You may also have a boost leak.

Looks like I will be checking for boost leaks and the shaft ASAP.

Do you guys know if upgrading to an evo9 turbo would be worth it or just simply buy something after market? I

Unless you've been doing something pretty wrong for a long time, like running it at extremely high boost levels with an improperly functioning BOV/DV, not changing your oil, etc. I'd be surprised if your turbo was bad. I'm willing to bet it's a boost leask.

4RETECH, that's impressive and reassuring. Good for you for KISS and running strong at that mileage!

there are numerous options to replace your stock turbo...one thing that is common to them all is a IX turbo to start with, so you will probably want to start there. u can get used IX turbos on here for relatively cheap...i got one a few months ago w/ about 15kmi on it for just over $400. even with just swapping the IX turbo for ur VIII will get u some gains for sure.

After looking under the hood I noticed the stock hose for the UICP had worked its way loose. I still may want to upgrade the turbo so ill keep the helpful reply's in mind. I am trying to baby this thing as much as possible but I am limited to doing much because I don't have a mechanical background.
