also when im running at the track my car bogs down quite bad coming off the line and i was wondering if maybe this is a clutch problem or possably something else???...ne suggestions on my problems???

well the launching problem i cant tell you but im pretty sure if you search ACT is known to have high rpm lockout issues.

The bogging part, what rpm are you lauching at? are you dumping the clutch?

yeah only thing i can say about the launching part is your rev limiter is too low or your launching wrong.

In fact lockout issues are common on the EVO with many different kinds of clutches and contrary to what some think, it is not an ACT thing. There are countless threads of all kinds of clutches having shifting issues (including high rpm lockout), but the more famous ones speak of ACT parts. Part of this is the popularity of the brand, but part of this may be my own fault for participating on forums, since it makes conversations longer and more drawn out. Before you know it we have a thread that is many pages long what has a bad title referencing ACT. Most won't even read past page one and that is what urban legends are made of.

I won't try and rehash old conversations, but in general clutches don't operate any differently at high rpm than at low rpm. Sure the disc has more inertia, but that is normal for any clutch and our disc is not significantly different in that regard. However, the engine dynamics at high rpm are quite different. Crankshaft flex and windage in the belhousing are just two examples. The bottom line is that the disc needs more air gap at high rpm than it does at low rpm, regardless of what clutch you use. More air gap is achieved by adjusting the rod at the master cylinder to gain more throw at the release bearing.

Complaints commonly start after the owner has taken his car to the track and suddenly it won't shift like it used to. Folks also don't realize that when they overheat a clutch and the surfaces become uneven, more air gap is needed. This is true no matter what clutch you use. Another contributing factor is that most won't bother to make changes like adjusting the m/c rod until long after they encouter shifting troubles, which puts undo wear on the syncros in the transmission.

I haven't been as active with the EVOm forum as I used to be do to work requirements, but if there are any questions (ACT related or not), don't hesitate to shoot me a PM or email. I would love to help. We are also producing a tech newsletter called "Clutch Chatter" that you can sign up for on our website that is very informative if you are a true gear-head. The next issue is going to the first of a series discussing clutch torque capacity calculations and different design variables. There is so much mis-information floating around, that we want to clear up some of the myths and let people know how clutches really work. Cheers!
