When did you get a VT muffler?

Not sure why some are having problems with rattling. I've had mine on since July 2010 with out any issues as most describe.

After all this time here are my notes:
-It does once in a while make a single clank sound. Its from the exhaust when it bucks it pushes the flapper open and slams shut. Not a big deal and not loud. Similar to back pressure pop just very very mild and not noticeable by most people. But its my car so I notice everything.

-On E-85 cold season and cold motor hard starts, it rattles during the start up. Lasts maybe 2 seconds as the rpms struggle to rise to target rpms.

That is all that my setup has. But just a note, I am running a center 6" muffler. I'm not sure how that affects anything since I havent been able to remove the muffler to compare.

I ordered a while ago and finally had the time to put it on. I was trying to call you a while ago too. I'm working a few things right now so hit me up for a cruise or something bro!

it rattles like crazy until the car warms up, and rattles like crazy when I have the AC on and I'm stopped. It also rattles when you come right off idle at slow speeds (like backing out of a parking space). It's pretty embarrassing. I know I have an exhaust leak in front of my turbo, so I'm gonna replace that gasket and see if it helps.

I have a subaru, so that might have something to do with it.

Makes me wonder something.

If with cams and >4.0 muffler it rattles because the valve shuts rapidly. Maybe the <4.0 muffler might be better? I would assume that the valve would stay floated open to let the exhaust pressure out and wont slam shut creating the rattle/clap sound. However it would not be as quiet as if it were completely shut.

I like to keep my cash fairly local so I purchased from MAPerformance and was very pleased with the service I received. I paid $400 shipped.

Here is a shot looking down the muffler:

Here is a shot to indicate the size of the inner pipe. This is a beer can:
Dumb question but did it affect power?

Looks really good!

My VT muffler didnt sound good at all in original form.

i have a 2.3L, s2 cams, e85, fp-blk......the exhaust sounded like i had a huge exhaust leak coming out of the muffler

on top of that, the flapper was doing it's thing.

so once i got home, i broke out the dremel & went to work.

i initially just removed the smaller top part of the flapper. The exhaust note @ idle sounded a lot better, but not much louder than my exhaust leak muffler. however, the flapper was still very happy, especially after cold starts...

after a week, i went ahead & removed some off the sides & this is where i am currently at. the flapper barely flaps now.

My neighbors say that the car is quieter with the new muffler, but after hearing it from outside; having a friend cruise & then jump on it, i dont care for the outside sound.....

The muffler does the job quieting the car down, especially inside...so it does it's job, but i will still try to looking in other areas....

I'll try to get some if spring ever gets to Wisconsin. Sound clips are kind of misleading though as you can simply adjust your volume to whatever because you don't know what the norm really is.

As for affecting power... I don't think this exhaust robs any power but the muffler may weigh a bit more than a simple ebay fart can. Still less than the stock exhaust as that puppy weighs a ton!

That's a really graet attempt. So with the cams and modification, does it flap often or can you be more specific as to what conditions it does?

I agree, that is why I started talking in that short clip I made. At least this way you can compare it to me talking at a normal conversation level.

it doesnt flap often...hardley at all now, only after cold start-ups when the idle speed is ~1500 or so.

once the rpm drops below 1400, the flapping stops.

so once its warm & idle speed is lower = no flapping.

Any chance we can hear a clip of this modified one ? I got a brand new one from Dynomax because my first one is rattling. If this dremel mod works i may just modify the flapper and sell the replacement.

I read somewhere that someone had tested both (might have been this thread). Only difference is the spring rate. Valve opens with less backpressure, so it will open earlier in any instance. Not desirable if trying to keep the valve closed when trying to accelerate to highway speeds off boost.
If anything, people should be able to cut an access panel and test different spring rates. Or add a dampener spring inside the main spring, eliminate the rattle. Would need to fabricate a bigger panel cover and some sort of temporary heat-resistant buffer, until you figure out your final spring setup and weld it back together.

Guys, I had the dynomax vt muffler in s2 cams and hated the rattle. Save yourself the money and order a 3 inch canon style varex muffler from map. As quiet as the vt with zero rattle AND the ability to keep the valve open when you want it loud and keep it closed for early morning commutes. I'll never go to another muffler, this thing is absolutely perfect!

Check this out. I decided to open my replacement VT and look at the valve.
