At 208,564 miles my timing belt snapped!!

As the title states, My f**king timing belt snapped tonight on my drive home .

Last Tbelt change was at 181K, so needless to say I am slightly upset.

When the belt snapped I was shifting into 3rd gear, flames shot out of the drivers side hood due to the backfire.

Anyway, This is where is gets interesting. I can now put in my clutch/flywheel, injectors and new turbo while I rebuild the engine

Only thing is if I find too many damaged parts, I might just need an entire engine

So my question, if some of you guys have been through something like this, what would you do?? Get a built engine, or rebuild?? Please also note: I don't have a money tree in my backyard.

Opinions welcomed. Also places where kits would be avail? thanks

First thing I would do is pull the head and check the piston tops....if there isn't any significant damage on them, I would just rebuild the head, unless you are looking to make a ton of power, in which case you should at least throw in some pistons and rods.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sorry to hear this, but I would salvage what you can and just build the motor while its all out, but I understand what you are saying about not having a moneytree. You got a lot out of her though!

well now that you are in this situation, it may be time to think "if i'm going to do it i'm going to do it right" But then again if you are financially unstable go stock, but it really depends how modified your car is now.

It was only around 3K, but yeah. I'm thinking valves and might as well do the springs, retainers, seals too. Holy sh*t this is looking expensive.

Yeah, but I am going to teardown tomorrow and see if something caused it. I will let everyone know.

I bet you could rebuild her for cheap with most of the stock engine parts that people sell around here.

Wow! Sorry to hear that man. I would definitely drop in some pistons and rods since you're taking the head off anyways.

Did you replace your tensioner last time you changed the belt?

Get in there and find any other parts that may be damaged. Valves may be bent and it may go further than that.

Then do some thinking and math about cost of rebuild vs getting new engine. Also, if you are going to be putting on the new turbo and other upgrades, you must make sure the engine is solid again before adding more power to it in order to avoid any other problems.
