So if it was you and you already had the HTA86, would you go with

A) 2.4LR + 4.11 Gearing
or
B) 2.2L + Stock Gearing

Wouldn't those gears make the car feel a little laggy?, I think you could get away with the 4.11 and some taller tires...probably would net you close to 160mph at 8500-8700 with the Evo 8 4th gear.

Not at all, for high hp strokers it doesn't really matter bc your making a lot more tq. You make so much tq with a 2.3 & or 2.4 on a fp black w/ E85 that some set ups are spinning tires all the way through to third gear all the while making quick cat like gear changes... So imagine what a HTA86 is going to do... You will probably be ripping through gears no matter what but not as bad with the proper gears & final drive.
That's why I stated earlier it becomes more difficult to properly set up a stroker. It's a hard decision because you want your car to feel fast as well as go fast.

^^^ I'm trying out a 3.735 final drive first on my 2.2L set up... If I feel that the gears are just to tall it has a home on my LR 2.4 set up w/ probably a HTA 3586 or TS variant if I got the cash...

My decision was based on driving a 2.4 fp black setup with the shep ultimate gear ratio and a 2.3 stroker 6262 w/ 4.11 gears on a evo 8 tranny, not sure of the gear ratio. Both cars ran E85 and the gears still felt way to short for me. :-(

I dont know i've seen a handful of people, maybe less using the 3.73... here's what John@TRE has to say about it, im sure you've read it though:

The 4.111 final drive will add 9.23% more mph in each gear, making it ideal for drag racing or for use with 2.3 stroker motors that aren't revving to the moon and those who are drag racing their EVO. The HKS final drive is ground after heat treat making it run quiet.

The 3.735 final drive gearset is 17.53% taller than the OEM final drive and is intended for stroker motor EVOs that are not required to rev to the moon and are making more than 485ft.lbs of torque. Our personal choice for the 3.73 final drive gearset would be a stroker engine with a GT35R turbo with EVO-8 1st gear, EVO-9 short 3rd & 4th gears and the JDM short 5th gear. While this wide ratio gearing is not ideal for drag racing the gearing is a pleasure to daily drive on the street/highway.

Wow really, well let me know how your car feels when you're done with your build.

I'm almost there at least for this phase of the project. The only hold up is going to be the BW EFR turbo...

After reading Buschurs dilemma in the tale of the 3 dyno sheets thread, I'm seriously considering building a 2.1 over the 2 liter. I'm also really leaning towards the BW EFR series turbo with a full-race kit if I can find a used one that I don't have to sell my kids for. lol

Shoot me a PM if you ever want to bounce some ideas off me, I'm always thinking about different set ups.

If I did it all over again with the budget I had the first time. I'd do a 2.2 and keep my ultimate ratio trans. Swap over to a twin scroll set up. Those new EFR turbos look so promising. If they live up to the hype, they're going to completely change the course of turbocharger history.

Yeah I wish there was more info available re: gear & final drive options but I just had to go based on limited knowledge and driving experience.

This is a very informative thread Looks like personal preference and what you're gonna use the car for are more important than what build is the "best" because they all have their pros and cons. I'll be building the 2.0 because I came from a "v-8 upbringing" and quite frankly I love revving high now that I have my evo. Its fun!! Haha anyways, best of luck on your build OP whatever you decide
