That's the Titanium Aluminide turbine wheel you're looking at. The comp wheels are billet aluminum.

Agreed, I know BlackE had a silicone coupler close up under certain circumstances, which shot up the shaft speed briefly and caused a failure.

I was thinking the same exact thing.

This also seems to be an issue with the 80 sized-turbine...there have been a few people who have those let go.

I wonder what the QC rejection rate for the 80mm turbine is vs. the 74mm......

The other thing to consider is that Matchbot takes in to account actual engine VE, so if the cells aren't filled in correctly then the output can be way off.....

By this point anyone wanting to run a large frame EFR is a fool if they don't use the turbo speed sensor. I'm not saying that BW is doing the right thing (well, they do tell you the max speed but we continue to treat it like a optional limit) and if you want to get even more turned off, they won't even repair a EFR turbo for any reason.
The fact is that the 80mm turbine is super weak and it only takes a brief overspeed condition to get the result your guy got..and trust me I know. My 9180 made 820whp at only 37 psi but only lasted all but 20-25 pulls and 600miles lol.
The 74mm turbine is very stout and I can confidently tell you that if you keep it at or below 120k it will last a long time, smoke free as well as opposed to PTE. And the comment that the EFR's make less power compared to a similar sized wheel is just BS. I've had my 9174 all the way to 900awhp, a turbo which in PTE talk is a 6764.... So it makes 6766 power and spools like a 6266

And I can save you the 2-3 month wait time. BW is not going to warrantee that turbo.
That's exactly the damage that happens from overspeed, the tell tell sign is the base of the shaft crystallization.

And boost leaks. Doesn't take much at 38psi to require a decent bit more speed out of the turbo to maintain boost.

Running 32psi with a boost leak my shaft speeds were around 115k, ran it this way without knowing of the leak, found and fixed the leak (cracked iacv housing) and now peak shaft speeds are around 8-10k difference.. even a small leak can cause the turbo to spin that much faster...

So first and foremost, vendor management has been part of my job for years. Even Supermicro which is the ****box vendor in the server industry doesn't have as bad as support as these borg warners. No other vendor, even ****ty turbonetics will force you to wait months to get a response on if you're going to be warrantied or not.

All this being said, I had a long and productive conversation with Geoff from Full Race and he flat out said "Don't buy a 9180 if you don't run a wheel speed sensor." The 9174s are far more resilient to overspeed and according to him he hasn't seen a failure from overspeed on one yet.

Next, I told my customer from the get go to run a wheel speed sensor because I was aware of the fragile nature of the 80mm turbine wheel. As for boostleaks, there wasn't any boostleaks on the car. We tested it before we ripped off the turbo.

Supposedly Geoff might be able to make BW take back their bleh 80mm turbo. Supposedly if this happens it won't be a 9180 we get back but a 9174.

We'll see. +1 for Full Race and -1 for BW.

6466 I've seen make 950whp. You're using a 67mm turbo and only making 900whp. I'm probably one of the biggest EFR fanboi's... but you have to call a spade a spade.

Thats a fair point but I would also bet that 950 is with that turbo way past maxed out and a all out effort.
Ive been up to 920 with 118k wheel speed, 3" DP, TP and a OEM head....so yeah, let's call it spade to spade.

I won't disagree that PTE makes a bad *** turbo that makes wicked power but I got tired of dealing with constant smoky turbos. But I'm also over the fear of blowing up these EFR's since they become a instant paper weight...so when and if my current 9174 goes I'm going to a PTE 6870 or the like since I'm just doing rolls/drag right now.

What's the max shaft speed for a 8374?

7670 is 140,000rpm (~64lb/min)
8374 is 128,000rpm (~79lb/min)
9180 is 116,000rpm (~95lb/min)

Or you can put the EFR wheels to the test on a BW SXE Air Werks turbo!

Although you can't do a bb center with those of course.

I'm trying to set up the speed sensor to open my waste gate at a certain turbo rpm. What do you guys think would be a good buffer to give the ecu time to open up the gate and slow down the turbo in order for it not to over spin?
Would 5k rpm be enough? Dont want to limit it too much either

I would think that would be plenty. But if the car is tuned properly, it shouldn't be an issue unless your running boost correction, which will attempt to compensate for a boost leak that might develop after the car is tuned.
