FP Red rebuild in another shop other than FP?

Hey guys,

As many of you know, my FP Red blew and I'm in need of a rebuild. With this said, I have already spoken with FP and they told me what I had to do to send it. However, by the way the turbo sounds I'm sure the compressor wheel and probably the turbine wheel will have to be replaced. Therefore I know it won't be $410 or the basic rebuild.

I was looking at the FP website and saw that they sell the basic rebuild kit for $100.00. and also sell the turbine and compressor wheels. I was speaking with the shop that always works on my car and he told me he can do the job. This would be of great benefit for me since I will probably have less down time and the job will probably cost me less since he is going to put the turbo back on.

I would like to know if any of you guys have ever rebuilt an FP turbo, know someone who has or if you guys have rebuilt your FP turbo this way(with another shop and not with FP). Please any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Have you taken the turbo off to check and see if your assumptions are correct? Something to note is that even though some things sound like they may have to be replaced that isn't always the case. Brian over there can fix compressor wheels, smooth out damage, and clip folded edges. Clipping was something very popular years ago in the DSM days as it increased spool up a bit. I actually just had my HTA86 turbine wheel clipped just a hair and was told it should free up some power which is interesting to say the the least.

I will let you know that I have attempted to rebuild another turbo (14B) myself and while it looked great and any shop could have done it just make sure they have the correct tools to balance it correctly as that's key a long with keeping clearances on both wheels in spec.

Either way, good luck

Thanks alot for the info. You have a good point on my assumptions. I haven't checked the turbo's damage. However, when I took it to the shop, the shop owner told me the same. We are not 100% sure if there is damage done to either wheel, but by the sounds of it, it's highly probable. Now that I checked FP's website again I'm not sure if they sell the compressor and turbine housings separately for the FP Red. They only ones they have advertised are for mitsubishi turbos. Either way, I just asked them via email and will post any updates. Also, the shop that always takes care of the car are very, very experienced with this cars and I'm pretty sure that if they don't have the tools or aren't capable to take on the job they would have told me so.

Thanks again

Ok, for those of you who didn't know(like me ), there is no rebuild kit for the FP Red. The only way to rebuild it is to send it to FP!

If your turbo needs new wheels, then it will need to be precision balanced after it is rebuilt. Each wheel is individually balanced and then the entire rotating assembly(CHRA) is balanced as a unit. I doubt that your local mechanic is set up to do this.

I would just go ahead and send it into FP. They do this for a living. If the compressor wheel is damaged then you might want to consider upgrading to the Black wheel. The Red and Black share the same turbine wheel.

Yeah this is what I will do. However, I was wondering how much time they would take to send it back and I get different answers... FP told me 2 weeks while other people have told me they have been waiting for MONTHS for a rebuild . Any more info on this?

That would be great man. However I have to get it rebuilt first and then converted. And for that kind of money I think I would go with meth since we don't get E85 in Puerto Rico
