Clutch help

I cant seem to get the output shafts to pull out of the tranny to separate t case and tranny to do a clutch install. I bought a bolt to stick into the shafts and tried yanking them with a chain and I did several other methods but nothing seems to even nudge them. DO I really need to buy a slide hammer? HELP PLEASE! And thanks.

I guess so. I had a slide hammer and it really didn't take that much pressure to remove it.

If you already have a chain with a bolt, run the chain through a cinder block or anything heavy with a hole in it big enough for the chain and put something on the end that won't pass through. It makes a crappy ghetto slide hammer. I got that idea from here. Someone used it once. It should work. An old flywheel would probably work. Have someone hold the chain straight and tight so you can slide the weight and hammer easier.

You can probably rent a slide hammer from an auto parts store.

Thanks for the help. I ended up getting it but it took way more effort then the tech guide how to install thing said. I literally had to yank the crap out of it a good 10 times a side.

If the collar/wavespring assy is damaged you're probably going to have to unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel and take it out with the trans.

How is that even possible with the transmission still on the car?

You have to fish through the clutch fork hole. It sucks but can be done, plenty of people here have had to do it that way.

maybe its damaged but heres how you get it off.

place the flat head screw driver on the trans side of the wedge collar so its against the TOB and the wedge collar........ then as you turn the screw driver so it trys to pry it off you push the clutch fork arm in so it helps force the tob off and it will release.

Thats what I have been doing but now its to the point that I cant even move the fork arm back and forth.

Idk if you ever did one before but I did it my first time last weekend and this helped since I'm a visual kind of learner...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vqicDPXugg

to free up one hand and have more pressure, use a vise grip on the fork and a chunk of the trans (I forget where) but youll see what I mean, it squeezed the fork towards the d/s and locked it and I had 2 free hands to mess with the tob, plus the vise grip pushes it way tighter then you can push the fork with your hands so it makes it easier to disengage

Thanks for the info. I did watch videos and stuff but I still couldn't get anywhere with it on my car. I have a new clutch and tried it on that and it worked perfect. I ended up having to release the pressure plate from the flywheel through the opening for the fork. The tranny is off the car new TOB installed, monday I will get the flywheel resurfaced.

your not doing it right then. use a big flat head stick it in and turn it 90 degrees then push the fork over with your other hand. if you do it right it will come off. i'm willing to bet your not getting the screw driver in the right place.

Im pretty sure I was. Like stated above I looked at multiple threads, videos and pictures on where to stick the screw driver. I used every screw driver, breaker bar to try and pop it off. Also mentioned above is I tried so much I ended up damaging the release collar and spent hours trying to pop this off. All in all I got the transmission off and thats all that Im happy about. It is my first time doing a clutch job on an evo so yes I will have problems that Im not expecting. Next time will go smoother and faster.
