Gotta face the facts, there arent many more options. Change the mivec gear, and the oil control valve in back. But id assume youd be wasting time and money.

did you bleed your lifters before install?
If you did and they lifters are new then obviously it is rod knock

I have the exact same noise as the op, my motor has just been rebuilt, everything was perfect for about the first 500 miles then the noise started and got worse and worse. I have recently noticed a leak at my o2 housing as i am getting exhaust out of my dump tube I will be replacing it this week hopefully it is that. Sounds like a weird thing it could be just because the tapping sounds more mechanical. However i am stumped and running out of ideas. I will repost after i fix this and let everyone know if it worked. in the mean time does anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be?

I go with the guy that asked about bleeding the lifters on install....was that done?.. and second, if its a bearing or bearings there is a significant drop in oil pressure at idle like 10psi or worse, so your oil light would be on...is it? Other then that it looks like you need to tear it down to find out.

I had the same noise on my tuned evo 8. It happend at 2-3k revs, on or off load. It was a spun rod end bearing. Pull the oil pan and check out the big ends.

1 new engine and 4000 miles later it happened again. I eventually figured it out. High G cornering starved the motor of oil - a known problem on the 8. For my 3rd motor I fitted an Accusump and I now have 60k on it with no problems.

Check to make sure the 4 bolts for the bracket under the intake manifold are tight. I didn't replace the two bolts on the bottom when I did my EGR removal and noticed ticking as a result.

i actually removed that bracket so it is not there anymore. Also update I just tore the oil pan off and my rod bearings are in amazing shape so we can count that out...on my motor at least

then its possible you could have a bad idler pulley or tensioner, hopefully not a bad timing belt tensioner... does this ticking become more pronounced say when u turn the wheel or turn your a/c on?
