They moved lifters around to see if the noise moved with them and it stayed the same. That is when they cut open the oil filter and found metal. No good.

You could only hear the noise in the 2-3k range and the car ran good. Motor is now being pulled and rebuilt.
What!!! DAM!!!

Your car vibrating after messing with the timing is probably because you did not get the balance shafts lined up right.

I just fixed mine. I only had one lifter that was noisy. I took the bad lifter out and put it in a bowl of 5w20. It was some left over oil I had laying around. Thought maybe since its thinner it will help. With it under oil I pushed the end hole with a paper clip to compress it and all this nasty black oil came out. I did this multiple times until it was clear. After that I took it out of the oil and sprayed the side hole with brake cleaner as I released the tension on the lifter to suck in the brake cleaner. I did this with the paper clip in the end hole to compress it a couple times. I then sqeezed all the brake cleaner out. Put it back in the oil and compressed it a couple times to suck in the oil. I put it back in with the side hole pointing towards the oil supply hole in the head. I started it and the tick noise was still there. But then the tick noise went away after driving it about 15mins. I have driven it about a week now and the tick noise is still gone. Im not sure all this was necessary but it worked. Maybe the thinner oil helped? Or maybe just getting the old black oil out did it? Well whatever did it I thought I would share.

You just did the lifter cleaning job, pretty much as described in the factory service manual.

Yup. You can also use diesel fuel for that as well.

I wasn't being critical. Mitsubishi knows lifters get dirty and sometimes can be brought back to life with a good cleaning. I just wanted people to know that what you did is a recommended procedure.

Its deffinately bearing..

my friend had the same ticking sound, after doing some doughnuts and other general nonsense..

we changed the lifters trying to fix the problem, but that didn't work...

he kept driving it like that and eventually the engine exploded...

we had to buy a whole new engine from UAE after that, because the block was damaged and a bunch of other things that got chewed up...

the wrist pin kept working its way out until it finally gilloutined against the block at high rpm..

Hassan, who did you take your car to?

did u try bin 7asher? or Shaker in Dumistan?

I reccomend u don't drive the car and take the motor apart ASAP..

or at least remove the oil pan and try to inspect it from under

Hey all, first time posting. Sorry for digging up an old thread.
Unfortunately I too have this same noise. It originally came about when the motor had about 73000km's, the motor was completely standard.
I decided to fit replacement Manley pistons and rods, not to fix the rattle, but I got worried after seeing a stock evo vi throw a rod! Anyway, when the motor was pulled down, it looked perfect, I mean perfect. Main, rod and balance shaft bearings looked new. Checked all bearing clearances they showed up perfect. Replaced the balance shaft bearings, oil pump, main bearings big end bearings, valve springs and valve guides, and lifters.
The rattle got louder! It genuinely sounded like a balance shaft noise and possibly big end noise, so I tore the motor down again after about 200km's, everything checked out fine.
The only thing that was not replaced were the rocker arms, could this be a possibility? They looked ok.
Anyone found the cure?
Hassan, have you found the problem?
Any guidance will be much appreciated.
Regards,
SS346.
