engine still ticking after lifter change
alright so after many many many months and a lot of money I found out that one of the wrist pins in my bran new Manley pistons had failed and become deformed and the wrist pin bosses in the piston ovaled out
I checked the wrist pins, the noise does sound like a dodgy pin, but they checked out fine.
The noise was there with the totally untouched motor, and still there with the new motor.

I honestly don't know, the last thing to replace is the rocker arms, I don't think it's the problem but I'm outta ideas.
dont tell me its been going on for over a year and you havent sorted it out yet???
many people have asked you direct and simple questions trying to help, you dont reply then post things like "more more". what do you expect people to do, if you wont help them help you?

Bringing back a dead thread. I'm dealing with the same issue in my car. The tick can be faintly heard sometimes at idle (not often), but heard mostly when driving the car with it above 2k-3k rpms and its very audible.
Is the general consensus a wrist pin gone/going bad?
I replaced my lifters and bled them correctly. thought maybe it was the pcv valve crapping out, but that has been replaced as well.
I have had the valve cover off numerous times and everything seems to look fine under there..??
Could a rocker cause such a noise?
I havent pulled the oil pan or head yet so I'm not sure how bearings/other things look, but I'm pretty sure if a rod bearing went out, it would make noise in all rpm ranges.
Any further input would be greatly appreciated. Has anybody else had this problem since and figured it out?

I have the brand new FIC 1050cc with the asnu technology in them. I had 1450cc in there before and thought that could be the noise as well, but that doesn't seem like the case.
basically im thinking it has to be internal at this point. Could weak valve springs be a culprit too?

I finally resolved this on my car, it turned out my valves were just barley touching the pistons. I mean just barley, it did not even bend the valves but we could see a very light scuff on them. I ended up tossing on the thicker Evo IX head gasket and it solved my problem.
Cory, Is you motor build or stock?

Was your motor stock when the valves were "tapping" the pistons? If so how is that possible? I realise we have an interference motor where different engine parts occupy the same area but at different times but I can't see how that could happen on a stock engine. Please explain? As far as the injectors mine are fic 1100 high z and I thought I had a bad lifter or something but the injectors just tick super loud. It bothers me lol but its just a noise. No performance issues with them. That's why I asked about your injectors. If you know how to use a screwdriver as a stethescope you could do that and rev the engine and see if the noise corresponds to the injector click as you do it.
That's really good to hear that it ended up being just the valves for you. Was yours throwing a lot of phantom knock because of the ticking? They were getting ridiculous counts of knock as that noise comes into place at RS motors where I had the car tuned.
so here is my list. Car is built
- 2.3L Stroker
- Buschur Stage 3 built head
- GSC 272's (old version)
- Cometic Head gasket
- ARP Studs
- FIC 1050cc ASNU High-z injectors
- AMS Fuel Rail
- Buschwacker Tranny Build
- Exedy Twin Disc clutch
- RNR 35R Turbo kit (AMS FMIC, Tial 38MM external gate, o2 dump, Tubular Exhaust Mani)
- Speed Density
- Buschur/Magnaflow Turboback
- 479whp @ 28psi on Mustang Dyno
- Compression: 152-151-151-152 ((so it doesn't seem like the valves would be bent, otherwise I would figure compression would be extremely low.))
The car was dyno'd @ RS Motors here in MN, where it was built. It made power and didn't seem to be having any issues other than the phantom knock and that ticking which drives me crazy.
Did you end up pulling the head yourself?

Mine are high-z as well. I just can't believe that 2 sets of injectors could tap the same way, and be so loud that they cause a phantom knock. Especially the 1050cc asnu ones I just put in that were $500 and are brand new. But I guess who knows.
At this point I'm really leaning towards it being something internal as the lifters were replaced, injectors replaced and I've made sure everything under the sun exhaust wise has been replaced and tightened to make sure it wasn't an exhaust tick. Spark plugs are snug.
Thanks for the responses and input guys any further input is greatly appreciated as well.
My valves were touching on my built motor, the setup just did not allow enough piston to valve clearance. As I stated before it was not even hitting hard enough to bend the valves so I was getting good compressing numbers as well.
If you have bled, cleaned and your lifters pressurized they probably are not the issue. I highly doubt your injectors are causing the knock sensor to go crazy, it definitely sounds like something is noisy in there.

I'll prolly drain oil and drop the pan and check things out down there before I go pulling off the head.
I'll try and get a video posted later tonight. you can check it out and see if it sounds similar to how yours did or not.
Did your's do it right away after your build or was it some time afterwards? I bought the car a few years ago and it just started making the noise mid/end of summer last year. There is probably around 20k or so on the build now. When I got it there was maybe 5k miles on the built motor.

If you listen at .32sec u can hear the knocking noise im referring too quite well, as well as a few other spots in the video.
ilikeppie did yours sound similar?

It's hard to tell from the video but it doesn't sound as bad as mine did. It does sound like it is in the valve train though.
I would guess maybe a couple of your valves floated at high RPM and touched a piston bending them just a little or maybe a bad valve guide.
You could do a leak down test and see if a good deal of air is getting by any of the valves.
My car did not start tapping immediately after starting up the built motor but it did begin after the first couple of high boost high RPM pulls. If you have had your's for two years and this sound is just now developing I would say it is definitely something that is wearing out.
