Any update on what the problem was?? My car makes the exact same noise and is only between 2-3k also. If its under heavy load it does not make the noise. My car goes in the shop to get looked at in about a week or so. The noise is definitely coming from the head on mine.

just a thought, i had this issue with a chevy motor and replaced the lifters...turned out to be a cracked piston. I had advanced the timing and apparently a detonation cracked one of my stock pistons. SO, if you're really scared about it, have your valves compression tested. If your valves are good, then check your pistons and rings for anything that looks unusual. Have to put it under some good magnification if it's a hairline crack. Good luck! That's all I can think of...

Sounds like either a lifter tick or a small exhaust leak to me. Doesnt sound like a rod knock or bearing issue to me.

bearing failure---ticks at low oil pressure and pressure will drop significantly in all rpms--- as it wears it will tick all the time...it will not, not tick at idle then tick at 2-3k and then go away. So lets stop with the bearing recommendation-

I've had 2 evo 8's already and both tick but not this loud. What i had figured out is the light ticking noise is the fuel injectors. Alot of new cars has ticking fuel injectors. Im not saying this is your issue but for the longest time ever i thought it was my lifters.

no kidding? never thought injectors would make a ticking noise. I do know that my stock lancer ticks when warming up, then the ticking goes away once the head is lubricated with oil. I know in chevy/mopar/ford motors they have parts to buy for the head that keep oil pressure from dropping and to help prevent dry starts: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CTR-24-006/

You could also try something like this stuff: http://www.barsproducts.com/100QR.htm

What weight are you using with your oil? Synthetic? The thinner the oil, the more you'll hear lifter noise. I like using 10w30 full synthetic, with one quart of 15w30. No more lifter noise once I did this...haven't had any leaks either. I was noticing with the 5w30 i was having blowby into my coolant, and a lot more lifter chatter during warmup...

I have torn my motor down and still can not find the issue, looked at the timing and retimed/tensioned it, ran the motor with all of the front cover stuff off and no serp belt to rule out any of the accessories, tore off the turbo nothing there. Ripped off the oil pan and took all the rod caps off bearings are all flawless. looking from the bottom i could not see any damage or wear on the cylinder walls. I also cut open the oil filter and there were no shavings. This is a devil noise from hell!!!! I am starting to run out of ideas as to what it could be.

So, did you bleed the lifters? I am not sure if that got answered. I can't believe it would still be happening either way, how many miles you drive on the car since the tick started?

Do you have a magnetic oil sump nut?
No metal shaving at all???
Mind to share what oil you are using?

Thanks

I figured out what mine was. Took the car to a local shop for them to look at and they cut open my oil filter and found metal. I hope this is not your case but the noise I had sounded exactly like yours. It even sounded like it was coming from the head. They moved lifters around to see if the noise moved with them and it stayed the same. That is when they cut open the oil filter and found metal. No good.

You could only hear the noise in the 2-3k range and the car ran good. Motor is now being pulled and rebuilt.
