"Break In" is for every new car which you plan to drive for a long time. The more "break in" you did, the less trouble you will get afterwards.

there are certain guidelines to break in, proper heating and cooling, no over revving to a certain degree, but driving it normally and not babying it is imperative to having a decent high performance motor.

I will be purchasing an Evo within 30 days and I would like everyones opinion on what to do dealer wise & breakin.

That is I am looking for this:

*Things to do immiedatly for best wear? (aka use real oil instead of synthetic for breakin)
*First & easiest mods to do (aka the steel braided clutch line)


Also how long can i expect the tires to last? I will be driving it daily with a moderate use (wont redline all the friggen time - will try it out here n there on freeway merges (after breakin)) I will probably take it to the track once a month or so - however much time allows.

Breakin:
Put real oil in and you're warranty is toast. Don't do it, not needed. Just keep the stuff in it, that comes in it, for about 1000-1500 miles and then change it. Then follow a regular oil change schedule.

The clutch line isn't needed. I'm not even sure it's proven that it helps yet. I don't think that is the easiest mod either. Not even really a mod.

It all depends what you want to do, and if you want to keep your warranty.

Biggest recommendation I can make... drive it the way it is, for a while. At least a couple months. This thing is fast enough out of the box that you don't need to do anything immediately.

The tires can last 8000-15000 miles. I'm at 11,000 miles on my stockers and they still have some tread left, but not much.

I agree with the idea of running it stock for a while. Do a thorough visual inspection when you pick it up. Check under the front air dam for damage. Check the tire pressure, plenty of folks (including me) found their tires were overinflated upon delivery. Check the wing for cosmetic damage. If you find anything, use it to bargain for a lower price. Sometimes they are delivered with the low beams set too low. Call Mitsubishi customer service and ask them to run the VIN to verify whether it is affected by a current emissions recall. Monitor the fluids, especially oil and coolant real close during the first month. The brakes may require a longer bedding in period than other new cars. Enjoy yourself and have fun in your new EVO.

Make sure to bed those brakes. Also, follow the specs for break-in on the tires, brakes and motor (200/400/600). DO NOT do drag launches - if you want to find out how fast it is, roll onto a street with a 45-50 mph limit in first and let her rip. You'll find out. I also agree with the comment about mods. I wish I had let my Evo stay stock for a little longer, but...

I have 10,600 miles on my car and my tires look like new. I drive pretty hard sometimes - it's just a matter of looking after them. Good luck!

Please explain about the brakes?

They tell you not to panic stop, but you need to bed the pads and the rotors. Go to an empty street, get up to about 45 and stop hard. Repeat this about 10 times...

You can do the repated 60-10mph stops. Make sure not to trigger the ABS. Brake at about 80% of max. After you do 10 stops for 60-10 drive for 45 minutes where you won't have to use the brakes. This will allow them to cool. Then repeat the stops procedure, this time from 80-20. Then park it over night and you'll be good. I did this on both sets of pads I've had and they held up well even with several track days.

I've been hearing from multiple knowledgeable sources that you should run regular mineral oil for break-in to allow all the internals to seat properly. Do a search on this website and you'll find a lot of interesting information on break in.

DO NOT run normal oil... there is no reason to, and you will kill your warranty. You can break it in fine with synthetic.

I just wanted to know what kind of oil did u guys use when u broke in the car cause i hear if u use synthetic oil it doesnt break in properly

Mitsu dealer explained to me that using anything but synthetic in this car can void the warranty.

I stuck with synthetic due to the watchful eye of Mitsu on these cars right now.

^ man you better change that soon (if ur still breaking it in)...your rings arent' going to seal properly. might want to go take the oil cap off and take a whiff...if you oil smells like gas..ur ****ed.

i have some crappy penzoil mineral oil in mine right now.
