Suggestions on Shiftknob/Boot

Hey all, yes I've searched, and unfortunately lot of threads that don't apply, or just reference a knob being used.

I'm looking to replace the bulky looking 05 MR 6speed shiftknob. In the process of removing it, I THINK but not positive, but I believe I need to replace the boot since it attaches with a button like on jeans, which wraps around the Reverse lock out ring. So by replacing the knob, that gets removed, which now the boot will not look right.

I am trying to find out suggestions on a weighted knob to help with some smoother shifts, and am starting to like the look of the AMS Delrin knob with the increased height. Now when comparing it to a TWM Dessert Eagle which appears to be the equivelent, then comes the issue of the weight. The TWM knob is much heavier then the AMS one and part of the easier shifts is the weight if I am not mistaken.

The downside of the TWM vs AMS is over double the price, or even triple the price for the nice gloss black TWM offers. Does any other vendor come close to the weight or at least in between AMS and TWM and around the AMS price?

Along with that, any MR owners replace this/what did you do for the boot? I see Redline has some options but not sure how it applies coming from the 6spd knob to a different one and what not.

Any suggestions on both areas would be very helpful.

Thanks

AMS, i just got it and the additional lenght give it more easiness to shift and better feel. More and more weight is not so good for your synchros as you won't feel all the strengh you put on them.

I'd say a knob is a knob.

Some added weight is definitely a plus though, I couldn't find the stock evo knob weight for the MR, so was curious on how much more the AMS one is since the TWM appears to be almost double the weight of the AMS one.

^- this... I have the WORKS knob on my 9MR and it's perfect.

OK, one exception. If someone gets in your car and they don't know how to get into reverse

^ assuming the Works is etched for the 5spd? How did that work on your MR btw with the boot? Doesn't the 9mr work like the 8 where the boot buttons around the reverse knob? Doing the works knob removed that no? (meaning no more bulge to button.)

The WORKS knob just says "WORKS"... it doesn't have a pattern.

It works the same as the stock knob in every way...

The reverse lockout / boot is further down. If you just unscrew your stock knob it will make sense.

Anyone else? I have found out that the AMS Delrin knob is about the same weight as the OEM knob and I am looking for something that is a bit heavier but reallyl ike their design. The only other option I see is the TWM Dessert Eagle Knob that is heavier then the factory one by about 2x. Is there something in between their weights, or similar to the TWM weight but not $130-150?

I HATE MY AMS SHIFT KNOB. I think it would work and feel a lot better with a short shifter but with stock shifter, personally I don't like it. Feels notchy and actually makes the throw even further

I've been through about 4 different knobs on my MR (Works, cyberspeed, Greddy), and I'm back to the OEM knob.

You don't need to worry about the shift boot when switching knobs because the reverse lock ring stays put (which is why you can't fit a lot of different knobs on an MR while still maintaining clearance).
