How long for bled lifters to quiet?

One of the many things I did recently was to bleed the lifters as I installed new cams. Followed the write ups here, and it was pretty easy. There are however two concepts. Some diesel them and fill them back up with oil. I opted for the more commonly discussed method here, which is to empty them completely and install them so that you can compress them with your fingers easily.

So mine are in and running the car for a bit (with my current high idle issue) they don't seem to quiet. I haven't had the courage to run the car for very long, because of the high idle, but I am wondering how long it should take to quiet them down, or them to fill up with oil properly.

10 seconds, 1 minute, 10 minutes?

There seems to be a bit of valvetrain noise, and based on the reading I should expect that, but hong long should that go on for. I know I have good oil pressure as my first start showed a leak at the turbo feed line from the top of the head. That happened pretty quick, so I know the oil pressure is good up to the head. (forgot to tigthten the banjo bolt, now fixed).

Any idea? I'm stuck.

bring up the rpms slowly say 3-4k and cycle it rev up let off gas, hold it at revs say 20-30 sec---or just take it for a spin with out hitting redline and that should quiet it down. You need to let oil warm up- may take 15-20min.

I drove around for about 30 minutes before mine all quieted down.

oh i misunderstood. i thought he meant on start-up, not when he bled them out. yea after you bleed them out, it takes some time to quiet down all the way

yeah, on start up after bleeding, and the motor being totally apart for 6 months. So everything is dry as a bone except for all the assembly lube I used.

I concurrently have a 2k idle issue, which I suspect has something to do with my new 70mm TB, and/or the EGR delete, but that is making be wiggy about idling a 6 month cold motor at 2300rpm.

Right now all I think I hear are the lifters. They are noisier than I'd like, but every post I have read seems to indicate they are really loud after bleeding. I guess I will have to drive it a bit and see if it improves. There is nothing really else to do to troubleshoot. I know I have good oil pressure.

Tomorrow I will work up the nerve and just drive the damn thing around the block a few times real slow.

meckert - thanks for the rpm cycling tip. I forgot about that. Since I don't have an rpm lower than 2300 right now who knows if that will do anything.

barneyb - what did yours sound like 10 minutes in. Still like there were metal on metal parts in the valvetrain? I have never had or heard that sound before, so the noise it is making sounds pretty nasty. I listened to vids on here and its tough to tell if mine sounds like that, because next to the engine its pretty mechanical mayhem sounding.

I remember that it was loud but slowly getting less loud. You could hear as each adjustor dropped out of the 'let's make noise band' and went back to work. I had previously done the same thing with a V8 engine. It was loud too and it took a while for the noise to go away. So, this just seemed normal to me and I wasn't alarmed.

I'd say that if you've driven around at 3000 rpm for 30 minutes and it is still loud, then you have a problem.

Yeah, I'll confirm as well. They are super noisy for a bit and I usually have to drive to make them pump up. I'd be more worried about the idle than the lifters
