Gearbox mushy, has to be guided back out of gear

Hi guys,

The other day I noticed that my gearbox started becoming mushy, there is no feel of the shifter gate when going into 5th and reverse and the other gears seem to be affected to a lesser degree. When I pull it out of fifth it just kind of wants to chill half way out of the gear so I have to push it back into neutral. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the gears, they all seem to work OK. At higher revs I'm also getting lockout from 1st to 2nd and the gearbox just feels stuffed and sludgy.

I've been busy all week so I haven't had time to look into it, does this sound like something is wrong with the shifter cable, maybe it's getting stuck. I had a quick look at the engine mounts, one at the bottom looks OK and one at the top looks OK also. BTW this also happens when the car is stationary, so can't really see how it could be a mount.

Anyone experienced anything like this? I'm going to pull **** apart and have a look at the weekend but thought I'd get a few suggestions first.

Thanks!

Solution = "Shifter cable/rod" on the gearbox side needed to be oiled up.

No problems!

I used some thick grease to lubricate the shifter cable (it's really a rod, the cable parts are covered with rubber and don't need oiling) and the shifter has a blunted/thicker feel. Don't know if this will persist but if you're looking for a snappy shifter feel I'd probably use some thinner stuff (some people use WD40).

An advantage of having the blunted shifter feel is the gearbox "notchiness" will be blunted.
