Clutch replacement ?

I've recently purchased an Evo from a member off this forum...

Gentleman that he was, drove 11 hours to drop the car off to me. But a scum that he turned out to be, now I am stuck with an evo that I can't even drive because of the following....

A lot of struggle going into reverse , I was told by shop it's " The ACT clutch " ....at firs I was told by the shop the pedal has to be adjusted but now they are saying its the clutch

The car doesn't want to go on reverse but after struggle it does !!! The cluth doesn't slip, goes into all 5 gears going forward, grabs nicely so shouldn't the problem be in the gearbox ???

Anyone wants to share their expertse or opinion ???

sounds like the clutch is dragging a bit and needs adjustment. So when the car is stopped you can put it in to any gear but reverse with no struggle or grind/clunk etc?

The clutch goes into all gears except for reverse while running. Ive tried going into 2 nd and then reverse but it's the same result. My shop tried adjusting the clutch pedal but that wasnt it, not sure if it's the clutch ?

With the car running on a level surface, put the car into first from a dead stop. If the car even slightly creeps forward when it happens, then the clutch is dragging.

Well that's really hard to determine what is a flat surface in NYC lol, but nonetheless i am changing clutch based on the explanation by shop owner, so I am hoping he is right...

lot a doe to invest for "changing clutch based on the explanation by shop owner" by any chance is he the guy that's getting the job?

If the car goes into all forward gears with no problem I would try several things before I changed the clutch, this not a $200 job.

Did you search on this site and learn how to adjust the clutch?
Did you change and flush the brake fluid?
Did you try a different fluid in the trans?

Try get a new set of cables they can also disconnect the cables while the car is running with foot on the clutch and check the gears manualy that will tell if it is the cables of clutch I would not go with everything the shop owners says unless he is changing the clutch free of labor shops will say anything these days to get business and make money

I am going with built longblock so the current clutch has a lot miles in it. The shop owner reassured me that the clutch is the problem so I will wait and see. Its a very reputable shop in Long Island, NY with a great in-house tuner !!!

i think it was on shep's website, or at least someone reputable, there is a reverse switch that is sometimes the culprit in a car with reverse only issues. apparently its a very simple thing to fix. I don't even know what it is, i'm just regurgitating, but it sounds to me like a switch that gets pushed when you go into reverse to turn on reverse lights?

If I understand what you are saying is that it might not want to go in reverse some of the time.

I have this problem in my 8 sometimes and the way it feels is that when you try and put in reverse it feels like you are locked out. I just put the car in 1st and roll it a few inches and then put it back in reverse and you should be able to use reverse. From what I understand is that it cannot go into reverse because 2 splines are pushing on each other in the tranny. roll the car forward a lil bit and the splines interlock into reverse when you shift;
Hope this helps, and i hope i am right. if not someone please correct my understanding
