It crumbles to dust because these filters doesn't have a reusable element and everyone tends to forget that ..
You ARE supposed to change the filter element after around 10-15k miles ..

and good point, I forgot to mention that most sponge filters are not reusable..
I got the hks rs and it has served me very well. Just make sure you change the filter every 5-6k miles. They are about 15-20 bucks a peice so it isnt hard on the wallet. And it is very well made. I love the way it sounds.... Get whatever you feel like getting but I put my money on the hks rs
Can someone point to why an intake system is needed? Looks and sound are not important to me. I just haven't seen the science. I'm sure an intake is needed at some point, but not with simple mods. Turbo upgrades with cams, etc. YES.
I have heard plenty however, of how folks throw off their a/f sensors with them. Also, some staged upgrades are somewhat incompatible with them.

Your absolutely right.. Its not necessary unless you've significantly increased the volume of air going into the engine and have the ability to tune for the "Freakyness" that some experience with the MAF sensor.
This is one of those "take it or leave it" changes.. It used to be one of those changes that I recommend a newbie do to get "used" to working on his car.. But now I shy away from it and usually recommend it only after you've made changes that require it.. Such as using an intake pipe that relocates the MAF slightly that you can no longer use the stock airbox.
And as long as you have the ability to tune your combination (IE Custom flashes, or ECU/Piggyback solutions that are adjustable) then you can use the Filter.. But a mailorder flash is kinda weird.. Most will do well with most mods, but will do best with the parts they recommend.. The exception being an Air filter.. since it can directly affect the MAF reading, it can affect the car's a/f curve.. so its important to stick with the recommendation of the company who did your flash.
having a custom tune (Flash, aftermarket ECU or Piggyback) means that as long as you tune with the parts your using, then it will make the power you expect.

I'm all for the Blitz SUS cone. I ran a blitz cone in my previous car, and it made a huge difference. Top it off with being a stainless element, and there's no potential for paper, cloth, or other element droppings to enter the intake manifold and muck up the engine.
The only downside is the cost. MVP is the only place that seems to carry it, and they have it for ~$200. Given that I hate cleaning and oiling the element, the Blitz is worth the cost (for me). Nothing quite like being able to rinse the intake in the kitchen sink, dry it, and throw it back on.

you should stick with the oem filter setup unless you are upgrading your turbo. The stock setup is good for 400hp and unless you want to spend a few hours on the dyno with a good tuner, the intake is NOT worth your time, money, efforts, and your EVO!
When you upgrade the turbo, then the stock filter setup has about a 30hp restriction.

HxllxMan,
Check this out. Let's go with the test results. Those 3 intakes mentioned are basically manipulated by our MAS. Yes they look and sound great, but most of the testing conducted shows that you are gaining a few horsepower, and the bad part is a loss in torque. So you gain some, you lose some. I'm not knockin on anyone elses feedback. Just giving the test results.
Take this into consideration. The air ram funnel we already have equiped is taking cool air in. Then, you have a open air filter under the hood taking in all the hot air from the engine. Take your pick. Unless you have your ecu re-mapped and can controll the air/ fuel ratios, it's a different story.

Thank you for your very thoughtful reply and input. I'm leaving my intake stock for now.
