On those surfaces, where the cap contacts the head, you barely use any gasket sealer. Just enough that you can barely tell its even on there. I would think that not using assembly lube would cause more damage than a little too much gasket sealer.

 

Are you sure you put the cam on back the correct position and on the right journal
That can easily happen and then can be very tight
