Backfiring Evo 8

My evo keeps backfiring, but only at WOT in 3rd Gear. Really, this is the only time it happens. I don't have fuel management, but I do have a full 3" turbo back with cat delete.

What's going on? Is this damaging the turbo? It is very loud and there is a huge puff of black smoke (40x40) cloud, oh yea...burnt the back have of bumper already, and yea it's burnt!

Please advise.

Damn, good luck with that! Wish I could help! I've seen that happen on several cars lately....

I was under the impression that the cat burns off any fuel left over from the combustion process. if this is truely how it works, then your stock (and overly rich) mix could build up enough fuel in the exhaust to cause a bang....

But this is just my semi-knowledgeable guess.

Run a cat. It will fix that problem.

You are right. I had a TT Rx-7 without a cat and the flames and backfire were cool until the bumper discolored, smelled like **** and people thought I was shooting at them because the backfire is so loud.

Hey AustinEvo8, do you have an aftermarket BOV? I am surprised that an otherwise stock car would be so damn rich!

your car is backfiring because it is running too rich, and the unburnt fuel is being burnt off in your exhaust. The thing is though, running catless also tends to make a car shoot flames as well. Getting some sort of fuel management is going to help out your situation a lot... you may still have a problem running catless, but the occurence will decrease once you lean out a bit.

I'll bet you get a cool flame shooting out your tailpipe on hard shifts too.

A side note, make sure your exhaust does not have any leaks.
Even a small leak will cause oxygen rich air to enter the exhaust midstream and will ignite the unburnt fuel like a SOB. I've seem muffler cases blown apart from such a case.
