harmonic damper

Hi I currently have ATI super damper on the car, been on there for about 50000ks. The oil seal is slowly leaking you can see it in the area around and under the damper.
My mechanic thinks its useless once he takes it off to replace the seal.
He thinks he might even have to cut it in half to get off as its on there tight what with vibrations from crank how long its been on there etc.

Whats should I replace it with? What are the big powered guys using?

Cheers

Either your description is not correct or your mechanic should not be working on anyone's car. There should be no reason he can not get it off.

You must run some kind of damper pulley. Stock is ideal but lots of people use fluidyine or ATI seem to be the choice most go with.

Yeh ack with my description my mechanic is Asian and is sometimes hard to understand
From what I gather he had to cut one off another circuit car not sure why or how that's possible without damaging the parts around it.

I've never seen one on a Mitsubishi that tight. They are not pressed on

I run a Fluidyine...it’s great. I'm not sure why your "mechanic" would say its useless as it clearly has a purpose and works very well....at least it does for me. I have the balance shafts removed in my car, and it doesn't vibrate or shake at all (compared to my buddies car which has noticeable vibration and no dampener)

Yes same here don't have balance shaft either so it doesn't vibrate that much I don't think... well as much as a car with solid engine and gearbox mount
So you reckon I need new one once I replace seals?

Not necessarily. Depending on age it might be find. Its just some sort of fluid inside the pulley, so as long as it hasn't degraded you should be fine.

ATI needs to be rebuit after a time. Fluidampr ones for the Evo don't need a rebuild.
It is secured by 4 bolts and don't need anything but hand tools to remove.

Fix your seal leak, and I'd recommend replacing it with a unit from fluidampr.

The ATI comes with a different crank pulley as part of the damper and it is pressed on.

The type of vibrations damped aren't the type you really feel. They damp torsional vibration, not the vibration associated with the balance shafts. The balance shafts counter the natural vibration of an I4 that can't be eliminated without the balance shafts.
