Transmission Issue

Hey guys I just got my 2005 Evo 8 recently and I got sort of a high pitched whine. I don't think its the transfer case death whine after watching and hearing some videos of it but I could be wrong. It gets louder as I step on the gas and stops when I let go. Also, on a rare occasion when I go to shift into 2nd and 4th it will grind a little bit and free rev until I go back into neutral and shift back into gear. After that, it drives normal. I feel like this is a start to a huge costly problem. Please help! Thanks!

Yep thats death whine alright. Sounds like its the output shaft. Possible its the ring and pinion. Or both. Regardless, only way to know for sure is to drop the transfer case.

Since you recently purchased the car, I'd start with new drivetrain fluids. New fluid in the trans should help with the shifting.

As for the whine, while I am not there to hear this whine I can tell you our drivetrains are not quiet. Especially with aftermarket clutches. My car makes all kinds of whistles.

Does this whine go away if you depress the clutch? Or say coast in neutral?

I'm guessing that the noise is occurring while in gear. If not it could potentially be your timing belt overtightened by previous owner. Throw a video up on youtube and post the link on here man. Hope it's not the death whine for ya.

It's almost like a high pitched whine heard from PPG straight cut gears. It's not the timing belt because I just got it done by a reputable shop and the whine was there before and after the timing belt job. My buddy told me its just normal tranny noises, others have told me its the t-case starting to go out. It's not like the vacuum noise when the t-case is really shot.

Can't remember if it goes away if I coast in neutral, I think it does. I'll be going for a drive today so I'll let you know. I know it gets louder as I accelerate and slowly quiets down when I let go of the gas and decelerate

Okay so I went for a drive today. Whine is still there but not loud as usual. The noise from my engine, traffic, and wind noise get in the way. It completely goes away when I coast in neutral or push in the clutch while in gear. It seems louder when I let go of the gas and let it decelerate than when I accelerate. Will I be able to do Shep's $349.00 rebuild?

I would never go with Sheps pricing. Always have extra just incase.
My trans whines horribly as long as it is in gear, mainly just first. Every Evo I have driven has a whine in first gear but mine is by far the worst I have heard. I would be more concerned with the grinding and free revving. Like others said, replace fluids and see what happens after that.

Going to go with Amsoil for the tranny and oem Diaqueen for the t-case and rear diff. Doing it this weekend hopefully. Lets see how it goes.

Update: Don't think it's my transfer case. I think it might be my transmission that is really loud. Synchros might need replacing. Grinds 2nd and 3rd when it's cold and I shift normal/hard. If I shift slow, it doesn't grind. Getting locked out of 4th if I push it too but I think that's a clutch issue.

I'm from MA. All the legit transmission shops are very far away. Shep, TRE, and Jacks are all distant. I heard good things about a local guy in Connecticut though. Still kinda far since I'm going to be out of a car for a couple days or even weeks. Anyone recommend other options?
