I had an issue like this. it was like hitting the rev limiter. For me it started about 8200rpm, and worked it way down to 7k. Finally tossed in a new sensor after trying everything else, and boom worked perfect. My sensor had 130k on it.

Apparently, the intake cam position sensor doesn't go bad as frequently? Assumimg its the same basic sensor, I'm tempted to replace it as proactive maintenance.

Or, get one of these tidy cam sensor shields from mpfab.com and eliminate the heat issue.

Or design your turbo kit to keep the heat away... And coat it :P AND STILL HAVE IT FAIL!

That's the most effective looking heat shield I've seen. I want it, but I think its going to get in the way of my DV.

Bumping this old post but we recently had some major issue while attempting to tune my fresh build after putting roughly 1500 problem free street miles on the evo. Once we got it on the dyno after installing the aem v2 and dialing all the maps in the night prior so we had a very good base to start off from. We did somedriveablity and cruise tuning and then tried a clean pull from 3-5k. Right at 4500 the car felt like it hit a rev limiter, fuel cut, brick wall. The fuel was coming in perfect, timing was good, AFR's were in their sweetspot. Tried a few more pulls and same result each time no matter what hidden tables or adjustments we disabled. . We started noticing the turbo was making a weirder spooling sound than it usually did on prior tuning pulls. The PTE DBB 6766 started to develop thrust play this again. So we kinda blamed it on that and pulled it off no big deal. The thrust play wasn't too bad but enough that while moving it you could hear an audible clunk. So I figure the turbo is going bad, not flowin( enough air and is causin this whole issue.

After reading this, I'm convinced that the exhaust cam sensor could on its way out described by the same symptoms you guys had. I've never changed it out 5/6 years I've had this car. Hopefully this clears up my issue. Once I get rid of that PTE Garbage and get a Xona Rotor turbo, should be back to boostin get like a raped ape. I'll update y'all if it fixed it or not. Thanks.

Well **** me sideways. Maybe this is my issue? I changed the damn head gasket I was getting so desperate for a fix, old gasket ended up being fine.

I'm hitting the terrible wall at high rpm, only in 4th gear when load is high. Feels like off and on fuel cut, but logs showed no reason for any cuts.

I'm getting cutout again! The behavior is somewhat different this time though. Now it seems to happen more when the engine is cold, but its the same basic scenario where rapid changes in rpm can cause breakup. I guess its time to order another intake cam sensor. Maybe I'll replace the exhaust cam sensor as well.

The first occurrence was definitely the intake cam sensor. The second occurrence that I mention just before your post was caused by gunked up injectors making the engine run lean.
