Car cranks but not starting.

Hey guys!

I'm trying to help my cousin fix his EVO IX. We parked it in his backyard the other day and were cleaning it. He left the windows open and went to sleep. It was raining a few hours later and his car got a little soaked.

When he tried starting it again, it didn't start. The car will crank but won't start.

Most of the vehicle's electricity still functions, so I don't think it's the battery.

The check engine light is on as well, when it cranks.

He said he was having problems prior to this, also. So I don't where to start. I've always brought my car to the shop since I'm still under warranty, so I'm kind of lost as well. I think this will be a good adventure for both of us.

What do you think we should do first?

Also the EVO IX is completely stock, so there are no mods at all. Everything is factory.

You should check the ECU with Evoscan, to see what errors it got.

I'm going to buy an ODB2 scanner from autozone tomorrow, I'll update once I get a code. Thanks for responding.

Update:

We bought an Actron CP9125 OBD2 scanner.

We connected the scanner to the obd2 port but when trying to scan the car, it will scan and then come up with the line: "NO LINK"

The actron manual says that if the "NO LINK" code shows up, cycle ignition key to off for 10seconds then back ON and repeat.

It keeps coming up with "NO LINK" and now when I have the key in the ignition, the car just beeps fast repeatedly and we can't get the engine to crank anymore!

Also there seems to be no more power to the car after connecting the OBD2 scanner.

What should we do next?

1) does it not crank anymore because the battery is drained?
2) did water get in/on the crank position sensor connector causing a short? The wire runs across the valve cover on the timing belt side and the connector is over by the injectors. If the cps isn't attached, the car will crank but the injectors won't fire

You may be a victim of the "Rain Gremlins"

Battery might be drained.

I don't think water got in to the crank position. We're gonna try giving it a jump to see if we can even get the lights working. We'll update later! Thanks all for your support.

THE BATTERY WAS BAD:

This is gonna sound ridiculous but we jumped the car and it started working. Here's the thing I didn't understand: There was electricity running through the entire car when it was cranking but not starting.

Here's a video tutorial we followed that was similar to our problem:

After the car started running, we ran the Actron and it came back with 0 Codes. Weird? I know the car is having problems with the check engine light on... but 0 codes?

Also the battery is about 2 yrs old... still pretty new. Idk why it gave out so soon.

So you replaced the battery and it started right up? Be very very careful with starting fluid that stuff is dangerous.
