Bigger turbo / P0234 turbo overboost + cutting off.

Hi guys.

My brother has an Evo 8.
He upgraded his turbo to bigger one 70/63, manifold and wastegate.
That is all her did.
Car would run fine till he hit +4k on third gear, car then would cut off (holding back) with code P0234, did scan with OBD scanner, it was turbocharger overboost.

We have searched for any possible leaking on pipes and wastegate, everything seems to be fine.

Did we miss something? What could be causing this issue.

Car is stock.
I think it's one of those modified or special, it was hitting +300hp stock.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

he will need to tune his car for the new turbo. you can not simply slap on a turbo and drive off. a tune to correct afr's, boost and timing are much needed.

Ok, he will need a standalone ecu right? Or is it possible with Evo oem?

What ecu do you recommend for this?
Is there something els he will need?
Thank you.

he will not need a stand alone. tuning on the stock oem ecu will be fine. however i would suggest if the car is truly stock other than the turbo, he should get:

-full 3" turboback exhaust
-3.5" intercooler
-lower intercooler pipe upgrade
-bigger injectors
-walbro 255 fuel pump

what turbo did he install and where are you located?

It's GT 35 turbo, and we are in Kuwait, I told him all of that to take in concern.
Would he need to get better map sensor than oem?

Yeah you cannot install a different turbo and expect the car to run perfectly fine. The new turbo is flowing a lot more air and requires tuning. Do not hit full boost or floor the car you will blow it up!

Turn down the boost until you have it tuned or you are risking blowing up the engine.
Slow down. And read. There is a lot of info on here. You will need a few more parts to safely run that turbo on your car.

Exactly as I thought and told him that, he wanted me to make sure first.

Sorry if I was a bit slow, I'm more electrician than mechanical

Thank you all, you were a great help!
