After getting my ptw clearance at the .004" I wanted, 2 sets of brand new rings had a gap of .026 on top an .032 on # 2. I just cleaned up the edges and installed them. Burns a little oil but I'd rather burn oil than break rings.

0.019 / 0.024 is more than enough. My current motor is 0.021/0.025.

I gapped the rings you sent me to .45 mm / .55 mm (0.18 / 0.022 in)
The top ring required filing but the oil ring was spot on.

Ended up gapping mine at .020 and .022. Did not have any issues out of that.
Someone said .022 and .024 which would have good result as well.

We did .022 and .028 when re-ringing just one piston as thats what the other rings were at. Rings werent bad, the orientation was just off and the ring gaps lined up with themselves for that one piston.

I had this issue on all 4 re rings we did due to blow by. Weisco said it was normal for rings to turn but we did not think they should be lining up.
This exact issue has pushed me away from wanting the 2.3L.
We measured all the bores as well as pistons to make sure there were no issues on that end. All the bores were excellent and pistons were correct as well. Honed different ways as well. Wanted an answer but never got one.

So you had a lot of issues with blow by? Did re-ringing help at all? This sounds like my exact situation. Everything was like brand new when we opened up the block.

Yes a ton of blow by issues. We gapped the rings originally at .024 and .026 and it burned a quart every 600 miles. Car did not smoke at all.
Re ringed with this gap twice after original build and no luck. Every time pistons came out the rings were in line.
Went to a .020 and .022 this last time. Car had about 300 miles and burned a quarter quart in that time. Started tuning and spun a bearing out of nowhere so didn't get a full result after any sort of break in. Seemed better.
Disassembled the motor and the rings were very close to lining up again but not there yet.

Great, that sounds like the exact problem I'm having. It was burning oil like crazy and when we did a compression test that one cylinder had slightly lower compression so we pulled the piston after running the routine tests i.e. leak down, had the head checked. We figured that since the ring gaps were lined up that could have been giving us the lower compression reading since everything else looked flawless. I thought that ring gap was too big but I didn't want to change it from its original length. So now a lot makes sense. Thanks man and sorry for thread jack'n op

That's exactly how mine started was low compression in 1 cylinder. Sent the head out and had it redone and re ringed the car. Every time there was a cylinder with lined up rings.
Pm me about it. Definitely interested is this since it bugged the hell out of me for quite some time.

did you bore the block using a torque plate?

The machine shop did, yes.
Also checked the bore using one as well.

Thanks for the info. We're actually putting my block back together right now so I'm hoping we still don't have low compression in that cylinder. You're the first one I've heard with having the same issue as me and I knew deep down that ring gap was way too big! Hopefully it works out though. I'll def PM and let you know how it goes.
