Play in piston/rod...

I have my head off doing valvesprings and seals and noticed this... its cyl 4 on the driver side, cyl 1, 2 & 3 don't have this much play. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Thanks

I don't think that should happen...

You should pull that cylinder and examine the wrist pin.

With the head off, should only take like an hour tops to get it out, drop the oil pan etc. I wouldn't risk leaving it.

Yea, drop the pan and pull that out to inspect, won't take long, the pan is easy..

There's only two places where the movement can occur, the rod bearing or the wrist pin. If the movement (play) in the rod bearing is the same as the other three, it is the wrist pin.

There should only be a few thousandths of up and down play, and 10-15 side clearance. If it feels like a lot more than the other three, you likely have a problem. pop the rod cap off and see how the bearing looks..

it def feels like more than the other 3, I was also able to twist (other video) the piston in the cylinder more than the other 3. Ill pull that rod and see if the bearings have any scoring etc. Also see it could be the wrist pin? odds of that being the problem?

i'd say rod bearing issue if it's moving that much. Do the others move like that?

i beleive something is wrong in the piston pin bore, small end of the rod or the pin

even if you had no rod bearings in the engine, generally there is 0.006" rod to crank side clearnace. the width of the rod wouldnt allow for that type of movement.

drop the pan & pull all 4 pistons / rods ASAP

there was nothing in the oil or in the bottom of the pan when I pulled it? So should I change all 4 rod bearings? The other 3 cylinders didn't wiggle nearly the amount that cylinder 4 did

Its the only way to be sure.

Could you just slap a new bearing in there.... Maybe...
